In 2024, Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. successfully partnered with a leading construction firm in Zambia to supply high-quality electrical wires for the South Luangwa National Park expansion and improvement project. As one of Zambia’s most renowned wildlife reserves and a top ecotourism destination, the park’s expansion aimed to upgrade its infrastructure, including visitor facilities, staff quarters, and eco-friendly power supply systems, while protecting its unique biodiversity. This case study details how we addressed the client’s core pain points with our professional solutions, reliable product quality, and efficient delivery, solidifying our position as a trusted electrical wire supplier for large-scale infrastructure projects in Africa.
1. Challenges in South Luangwa National Park’s Expansion
South Luangwa National Park, located at the junction of Zambia’s Eastern, Northern, and Central Provinces, covers approximately 9,050 square kilometers and is home to over 60 mammal species and 400 bird species. The 2024 expansion project focused on building new eco-friendly visitor centers, upgrading existing staff accommodations, and installing a stable power supply network across the park’s remote areas. The client, a Zambian construction company with extensive experience in national park infrastructure, faced several critical challenges that threatened the project’s progress and safety.
First, the park’s remote location and harsh natural environment—including high temperatures, occasional heavy rains, and rocky terrain—required electrical wires that could withstand extreme weather and mechanical damage. The client initially considered low-cost wires from local suppliers, but these products lacked international certifications and failed to meet Zambia’s national electrical safety standards (ZDS 418–1:2024), posing fire and power outage risks that could damage the park’s ecosystem and endanger wildlife and visitors. Second, the project had a tight timeline, and the client struggled to find a supplier with sufficient stock to meet urgent delivery needs, as local suppliers often had long lead times for specialized wires. Third, the project required a mix of wire types for different scenarios—from indoor wiring in visitor centers to underground and outdoor wiring in remote areas—demanding a supplier with comprehensive product lines and project experience.
After researching international suppliers, the client chose Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. for our proven track record in African infrastructure projects, full range of certified products, and sufficient inventory. The core requirement was to supply three key wire types: H05V-U, SWA (Steel Wire Armoured Cable), and H05Z-K, along with other supporting wires, to meet the diverse needs of the expansion project. The total order quantity reached 85,000 meters, covering multiple specifications to accommodate different installation scenarios.
2. Tailored Wires for the Park’s Unique Needs
Based on the client’s challenges and the project’s specific requirements, our team conducted a detailed analysis of the park’s environment and infrastructure needs, then provided a customized solution centered on the three core wire types, ensuring each product was selected for its unique advantages over alternatives.
2.1 H05V-U: Ideal for Indoor Wiring in Visitor Facilities
For indoor wiring in the new visitor centers, staff quarters, and control rooms, we recommended the H05V-U wire, which is specifically designed for indoor use in dry environments with protection. A key specification for this project was H05V-U 2x1.5mm, which was used extensively for lighting and small electrical appliances in the visitor centers. This specification features two cores of 1.5mm² each, providing stable current transmission and low voltage drop, making it perfect for the park’s indoor lighting systems.
The client chose H05V-U over other indoor wires because of its superior flexibility and flame-retardant properties. Unlike H03VV-F, which has a thinner insulation layer and is only suitable for low-power applications, H05V-U has a thick PVC insulation layer that resists high temperatures (up to 70°C) and prevents fire spread—critical for protecting the park’s wooden and eco-friendly building materials. We supplied H05V-U in multiple specifications, including 2x1.5mm, 3x2.5mm, and 4x4mm, totaling 32,000 meters, to meet the varying indoor wiring needs of different facilities.
2.2 SWA: Durable for Outdoor and Underground Use
The park's outdoor power supply network is responsible for connecting visitor centers with remote staff stations and eco-friendly generators, requiring an electrical wire that can withstand mechanical damage, underground burial, and extreme weather. We recommended SWA (Steel Wire Armoured Cable), a durable cable composed of a black PVC sheath, XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation, copper conductors, and steel wire armoring. This armoring can effectively resist physical damage caused by rocks, animal activities, and excavation, making it very suitable for the park's rocky terrain and underground installation needs. Different specifications of SWA are accurately allocated according to power supply load and scene requirements.

Compared with unarmored cables such as YJV,SWA has superior durability and tensile strength, eliminating the need for additional protective sleeves and reducing installation costs. In this project, the SWA we supplied covers a variety of specifications, each with clear and precise uses: the 3x10mm specification is mainly used for low-voltage power supply secondary lines of remote staff stations and small eco-friendly generators, adapting to low-power distributed power supply needs; the 4x16mm specification is used for medium-load secondary lines, connecting multiple small facility clusters for power supply; the 4x25mm specification is used for outdoor power supply lines around high-traffic visitor centers, adapting to medium-power centralized power supply; the 4x35mm specification is used for the park's main underground power trunk line, undertaking the high-power centralized power supply task for the core area of the entire park to ensure stable power transmission. The total length of all specifications reaches 28,000 meters, fully covering the park's outdoor and underground power supply scenarios. In addition, the XLPE insulation layer of SWA also has excellent chemical resistance and thermal stability, ensuring reliable operation even in the park's high-temperature environment.
2.3 H05Z-K: Flexible for Equipment Internal Wiring
For the internal wiring of electrical equipment, such as power control panels, lighting fixtures, and small generators in the park, we provided H05Z-K wires. This wire features polyethylene insulation with excellent mechanical performance, low-temperature flexibility, and high chemical stability, making it suitable for equipment internal use in environments up to 90°C. The H05Z-K wire is also flame-retardant and RoHS/REACH compliant, aligning with the park’s eco-friendly requirements.
The client selected H05Z-K over similar wires like H05V-K because of its superior flexibility, which allows for easy installation in tight spaces within equipment. We supplied H05Z-K in specifications ranging from 1x1.0mm to 1x4.0mm, totaling 15,000 meters, to fit different equipment wiring needs. Additionally, the wire’s thin insulation layer ensures it does not take up excessive space in control panels, while maintaining reliable electrical insulation performance.
2.4 Supporting Wires for Comprehensive Coverage
To ensure the entire power system was fully functional, we also supplied supporting wires, including H07V-K (1x16mm, 1x25mm) for battery connections in backup power systems and YJV (4x240mm) for large-scale power transmission in the park’s main supply lines. These additional wires complemented the core three types, providing a complete electrical solution for the expansion project.
3. Certified Quality for Eco-Friendly and Reliable Operation
Safety was a top priority for the South Luangwa National Park project, as electrical failures could not only delay the project but also pose risks to the park’s ecosystem, wildlife, and visitors. Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. ensured all supplied wires met strict international and local standards, providing the client with full confidence in product safety and reliability.

All our wires, including H05V-U, SWA, and H05Z-K, are certified by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), SAA (Standards Australia), and UL (Underwriters Laboratories), ensuring they comply with global safety standards. Additionally, the products meet Zambia’s national electrical safety code (ZDS 418–1:2024), which governs the construction, installation, and commissioning of electrical systems in the country. Before shipment, each batch of wires underwent strict quality testing, including conductor resistance, insulation thickness, flame retardancy, and mechanical strength, to ensure no defective products reached the project site.
Compared to low-cost, uncertified wires from local suppliers, our certified products significantly reduced the risk of short circuits, fires, and power outages. For example, the flame-retardant properties of H05V-U and H05Z-K prevent fire spread, while the armouring of SWA protects against damage that could lead to exposed conductors and electrical hazards. This commitment to quality aligns with the park’s eco-friendly goals, as reliable electrical systems reduce the need for frequent maintenance and replacement, minimizing environmental impact.
4. Fast and Efficient to Meet Tight Timelines
The client emphasized that the project had a tight timeline, and any delay in wire delivery would disrupt the construction schedule, leading to additional costs. One of the key reasons the client chose us was our sufficient inventory and efficient logistics capabilities, which allowed us to deliver the entire order quickly and reliably.
At the time of the order, we had all three core wire types (H05V-U, SWA, H05Z-K) in stock, covering all required specifications. This eliminated the need for production lead times, which are common with other suppliers. We arranged for international shipping via Durban Port in South Africa, with customs clearance assistance to ensure smooth delivery to the project site in Zambia. Despite the long distance, we completed the entire delivery process in a much shorter time than the client expected.
Our team also provided detailed shipping documents, including certification reports, quality test records, and customs declarations, to simplify the import process for the client. Upon delivery, we offered technical support to help the client verify the product specifications and ensure proper installation, further streamlining the project progress.
