How We Delivered 150km of Power in 14 Weeks to Santo Domingo–Santiago
Country: Dominican Republic
Industry: Infrastructure & Power Transmission
Project Type: Highway Electrification
Timeline: 2023–2024
The Challenge: A Highway That Needed Power—Fast
The call came in October 2023. A major contractor in the Dominican Republic needed cables for the Santo Domingo–Santiago Electric Highway. This 150-kilometer corridor would connect the capital to the country's second-largest city. The project had a hard deadline. The cables had to arrive in 14 weeks. Any delay meant penalties. Any failure meant darkness on a critical national route.
The contractor had already faced problems. Previous suppliers delivered cables without proper UL documentation. Inspectors rejected them. Projects stalled. Money burned.
This time, they needed three things:
• Certified quality that passes inspection the first time
• Tropical-grade durability for direct burial in harsh Caribbean conditions
• Guaranteed delivery to keep construction crews working
They found us. We are Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd.
The Problem Behind the Problem
We flew to Santo Domingo to understand the real issue. It wasn't just about buying cables. It was about trust.
The project engineer explained their pain. "Last year, we used standard PVC cables on a toll plaza. Within six months, the sun cracked the insulation. Water got in. We had to dig everything up."
They also worried about heat. Summer temperatures hit 40°C. Standard MV90 cable handles 90°C. But with future load growth, they needed margin for error.
Time was the biggest enemy. The construction schedule was fixed. The rainy season was coming. If cables arrived late, crews would sit idle. Daily penalties would start.
Our Solution: Three Cables, One System
We didn't just quote prices. We designed a system.
MV105 for the Backbone
For the 15kV primary feeders, we recommended MV105 instead of standard MV90.
Why? MV105 operates at 105°C continuously—15 degrees higher than MV90. This meant:
• 15% more power capacity in the same conduit size
• Safety margin during emergency overloads
• Future-proofing for load growth without replacing cables
We supplied MV105 in 4/0 AWG and 350 MCM copper. Each cable had tree-retardant XLPE insulation and sunlight-resistant LLDPE jackets. Triple-extruded construction. Dry-cured for zero voids. The client asked: "Why pay more for MV105?" We showed the math. The upgrade cost 8% more. But avoiding one future overload failure would save 300% in downtime and replacement costs.
XHHW-2 Cable for Engineering Projects: The Smart Choice for Distribution
For 600V secondary circuits—toll plazas, tunnel fans, lighting—we specified XHHW-2 cable for engineering projects.
The original design called for THWN in conduit. We proposed XHHW-2 in direct burial.
XHHW-2 uses cross-linked polyethylene, not PVC+nylon.

This matters in the tropics:
• XLPE doesn't melt or crack in heat
• It resists moisture without extra protection
• It lasts 30+ years in wet soil
We provided sizes from 1/0 AWG to 750 MCM. The 750 MCM used compact-stranded copper. Easier to pull. Less space needed. Lower installation cost.
The contractor saved 35% on labor by skipping conduit in underground sections. The cables went straight into the trench. Backfill and done.
MC Cable with THWN for Controls
For traffic signals and control systems, we supplied MC Cable with THWN conductors from 14 AWG to 4/0 AWG.
MC Cable has built-in aluminum armor. No conduit needed. Installers just unroll and connect. The interlocked design flexes around corners but protects against crushing.
We added color-coded conductors and insulated ground wires. Less confusion in the field. Faster termination. Fewer errors.
Why UL Certification Won the Contract
The Dominican Republic requires UL-listed products for government projects. We didn't just have certificates. We had the right certificates.
• MV90 / MV105: UL 1072
• XHHW-2: UL 44
• THWN: UL 83
• MC Cable: UL 1569
Every cable carried current listings. Every shipment included test reports, material certifications, and traceability documents.
When inspectors arrived, they checked the labels. They checked the paperwork. They approved immediately. No delays. No rework.
This is why UL certification matters. It's not a piece of paper. It's a passport through customs and inspection.

Execution: 11 Days Early
We promised 14 weeks. We delivered in 12 weeks and 3 days.
Week 1: Contract signed. 60% of order shipped from stock—MV105 4/0 AWG and standard XHHW-2 cable for engineering projects left our Dongguan facility within 72 hours.
Weeks 2-8: Manufacturing the specialized sizes. 750 MCM XHHW-2. 350 MCM MV105. Our vertical integration meant no waiting for sub-suppliers. We control copper rod to final jacket.
Weeks 9-11: Testing and packaging. Every medium voltage cable passed AC high-pot testing. Insulation resistance verified. Continuity confirmed. Moisture-barrier export packaging applied.
Week 12: Container loaded. Shipment tracked in real-time. Arrival at Caucedo Port.
The contractor had 11 days of buffer. They used it to pre-stage materials and train installation crews. When cables hit the ground, work started immediately.
The Result: Zero Failures, Full Power
The highway energized in Q2 2024. Since then:
• Zero cable failures through hurricane season and 40°C summer peaks
• MV105 operating with thermal headroom to spare
• XHHW-2 cable for engineering projects performing flawlessly in wet, direct-burial conditions
• MC Cable installations completed 40% faster than conduit methods
The project engineer reported: "This is the first major electrical job we've done without callbacks. The cables just work."
What Made the Difference
Three things separate us from commodity suppliers:
1. Engineering Partnership
We don't take orders. We solve problems. We upgraded their design from MV90 to MV105. We switched them from conduit to XHHW-2 direct burial. These changes saved money and improved performance.
2. Documentation Excellence
International projects drown in paperwork. We provide complete compliance packages. UL certificates. Test reports. Material traceability. Customs pre-clearance support. Our clients don't get stuck at borders.
3. Speed Without Sacrifice
Fast delivery usually means cutting corners. We delivered early while maintaining 100% testing protocols. Our inventory depth and manufacturing control make this possible.
Your Project Deserves the Same Certainty
The Santo Domingo–Santiago highway proves that cable selection determines project success. The right products—MV90, MV105, XHHW-2 cable for engineering projects, MC Cable with THWN—deliver decades of reliable service. The right supplier delivers them on time, fully certified, with expert support.
We have supported infrastructure projects across Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Our UL-certified cables power highways, factories, data centers, and renewable energy installations worldwide.
