In 2023, our team partnered with the construction team of the Chilca 500/220 kV Substation in Chilca, Lima, Peru, to provide high-quality wire solutions for this key energy infrastructure project. As a critical upgrade project operated by Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Chilca Substation is designed to handle 500 kV incoming voltage and 220 kV outgoing voltage, with a final capacity of 600 MVA upon completion, aiming to improve the stability and efficiency of the local power grid. The project required wires that could withstand harsh outdoor conditions, meet strict international safety standards, and fit within a limited budget—challenges that led the client to choose our team as their trusted wire export partner.
1. Challenges Faced by the Chilca Substation Construction Team
The Chilca Substation project is a vital part of Peru’s energy infrastructure upgrade plan, scheduled for commissioning in 2024. The construction team encountered several key pain points during the wire sourcing process, which threatened to delay the project timeline and increase costs. First, the substation’s location in Chilca exposes electrical components to high humidity, intense sunlight, and occasional temperature fluctuations, requiring wires with strong resistance to moisture, UV radiation, and mechanical wear. Second, as an international project, all electrical products had to meet UL certification standards—a non-negotiable requirement for safety and compliance in the power industry, yet many suppliers could not provide valid UL certifications or struggled to prove product compliance with UL 44 and other relevant standards. Third, the client faced budget constraints; they needed high-quality wires but could not afford the overpriced products offered by local Peruvian suppliers or large international brands. Finally, the team needed a supplier with extensive experience in large-scale substation projects, as improper wire selection or installation could lead to equipment failure, power outages, and even safety hazards.
After researching multiple wire exporters, the client chose our company for three core reasons: our UL-certified product lineup, our proven experience in international substation projects, and our competitive pricing that balanced quality and cost. The client’s primary goal was to source wires that would ensure long-term reliability, meet all safety standards, and fit their budget—needs we were fully equipped to address.
2. Choosing the Right Wires for the Chilca Substation
Based on the client’s pain points and the project’s technical requirements, we recommended three key wire types: Instrumentation Cables (Type TC), MC Cable, and XHHW-2—each selected for its unique advantages and suitability for the substation’s specific applications. We worked closely with the client’s engineering team to finalize specifications, ensuring each product aligned with the project’s voltage, environmental, and safety needs.
The Instrumentation Cables (Type TC) were chosen for the substation’s control and monitoring systems, which require precise signal transmission. We provided Type TC cables in sizes 14 AWG to 8 AWG, with 2 to 12 conductors, featuring flame-retardant XLPE insulation and a CPE outer jacket. Unlike other instrumentation cable types (such as MC-HL), Type TC offers greater flexibility, a smaller outer diameter, and a lower bending radius—making it easier to install in tight spaces within the substation without requiring special equipment. Its oil-resistant and sun-resistant properties also make it ideal for outdoor and semi-outdoor installations, addressing the client’s concern about harsh environmental conditions. Additionally, our Type TC cables are UL listed (UL 1277), ensuring compliance with international safety standards for tray cables used in power systems.
For power distribution within the substation, we recommended MC Cable (Metal-Clad Cable), available in sizes 12 AWG to 4/0 AWG, with 3 to 4 conductors. MC Cable is known for its durability and safety, featuring a corrugated aluminum sheath that provides excellent protection against moisture, physical damage, and electromagnetic interference—critical for a high-voltage substation environment. Unlike non-metallic cables, MC Cable does not require additional conduit for installation, reducing labor costs and installation time for the client. Our MC Cables are UL certified (UL 1569), meeting the strict safety requirements for use in hazardous locations within the substation, such as areas with high electrical load and potential arc flash risks. This certification was a key differentiator, as many competitors’ MC Cables lacked valid UL credentials, making them ineligible for the project.
The third key product we supplied was XHHW-2 cable, which played a crucial role in the substation’s power transmission system. We provided XHHW-2 in sizes 10 AWG to 350 kcmil, rated for 600V, with annealed copper conductors and XLPE insulation. XHHW-2 cable for mining projects is also highly suitable for substation applications due to its exceptional performance in harsh environments—its XLPE insulation is moisture-resistant, UV-stabilized, and capable of withstanding continuous operating temperatures of up to 90°C, with short-circuit temperatures reaching 250°C. Unlike standard XHHW cables, XHHW-2 features a more durable insulation layer that resists chemical corrosion and mechanical wear, making it ideal for the Chilca Substation’s outdoor and underground installations. The client chose XHHW-2 over other similar cables because of its UL certification (UL 44), superior durability, and lower long-term maintenance costs—factors that aligned perfectly with their goal of building a reliable, low-maintenance substation.

3. UL Certification and Quality Control as Core Priorities
Safety is the top priority in any power infrastructure project, and the Chilca Substation was no exception. The client’s strict requirement for UL certification was a non-negotiable condition, and our company’s extensive UL-certified product lineup was a key reason we were selected. All three wire types supplied for the project—Type TC Instrumentation Cables, MC Cable, and XHHW-2—are fully UL certified, complying with UL 44, UL 1277, and UL 1569 standards, as well as ASTM B3 and ASTM B8 for conductor quality. This certification ensures that the wires meet the highest safety standards for electrical performance, fire resistance, and environmental durability, reducing the risk of equipment failure and safety hazards.
In addition to UL certification, we implemented a rigorous quality control process to ensure every batch of wires met the project’s specifications. Our quality control team conducted pre-production inspections of raw materials (including high-purity copper conductors and XLPE insulation), in-process testing during manufacturing, and post-production testing for electrical performance, insulation resistance, and mechanical strength. We also provided the client with detailed test reports and certification documents, giving them full transparency and confidence in the products they were receiving. This commitment to quality stood out to the client, as many other suppliers could not provide such comprehensive quality assurance or valid certification documentation.
4. Efficient, Transparent, and On Schedule
The client was concerned about potential delays in wire delivery, which could disrupt the substation’s construction timeline. To address this, we developed a detailed delivery plan tailored to the project’s construction schedule, coordinating with our production team and international logistics partners to ensure timely delivery without compromising quality. We avoided specifying exact delivery dates but maintained clear communication with the client throughout the process, providing regular updates on production progress, shipping status, and expected arrival times in Lima.
Our experience in international wire exports allowed us to navigate the logistical challenges of shipping to Peru, including customs clearance, documentation, and transportation. We prepared all necessary export documents, including commercial invoices, packing lists, UL certification copies, and product test reports, to ensure smooth customs clearance. We also worked with a trusted logistics partner to deliver the wires to the Chilca Substation site, ensuring that the products arrived in perfect condition—free from damage, moisture, or contamination. The client appreciated our transparent communication and efficient execution, as it allowed them to plan their construction schedule with confidence and avoid costly delays.
5. Reliable Performance and Client Satisfaction
Since the wires were installed in the Chilca Substation, they have performed exceptionally well, meeting all the project’s technical and safety requirements. The Type TC Instrumentation Cables have ensured stable signal transmission for the substation’s control systems, with no signal interference or performance issues. The MC Cables have provided reliable power distribution, withstanding the substation’s high electrical loads and harsh environmental conditions without any damage or failures. The XHHW-2 cables have delivered consistent power transmission, demonstrating their durability and resistance to moisture, UV radiation, and mechanical wear—even in the most challenging areas of the substation.
The client was highly satisfied with the outcome of the project, as our wires not only met all their requirements but also helped them stay within budget.
