GERITEL
Apr 01,2026
In 2025, as part of the second-phase expansion of the Las Bambas copper mine located in the Apurímac region of Peru—a world-class open-pit copper mine operated by a leading international mining group—our team at Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. successfully provided a comprehensive wire supply solution. The project, aimed at expanding the mine’s production capacity to 400,000 tons of copper metal per year, required high-performance, certified electrical wires to support the operation of new mining equipment, power distribution systems, and control units in harsh high-altitude and humid environments. After a rigorous selection process, we were chosen as the sole wire supplier for the project, delivering THWN Wire, XHHW Wire, and Control Cables (Type TC-ER) that perfectly addressed the client’s core pain points and ensured the smooth progress of the expansion.
1. The Challenges of Mining Expansion in Peru’s High-Altitude Environment
Las Bambas, located in the Apurímac region of southern Peru at an altitude of 3,800 to 4,650 meters, is one of the world’s top five copper mines, contributing approximately 15% of Peru’s copper exports and playing a crucial role in the country’s economy. The 2025 expansion project focused on upgrading the Chalcobamba mining area, including the construction of new ore processing plants, power supply systems, and transportation facilities. However, the project faced unique challenges that made the selection of electrical wires a critical task.
The client’s core pain points were clear: first, the harsh operating environment—high altitude, large temperature differences (ranging from -10°C to 35°C), and occasional rain and humidity—required wires with strong resistance to moisture, temperature changes, and abrasion. Second, as an international mining project, all electrical components had to meet strict international standards and hold authoritative certifications, particularly UL certification, to ensure compliance with local safety regulations and avoid project delays due to certification issues. Third, the expansion project had a tight schedule, and any delay in wire delivery would directly affect the overall construction progress, leading to significant economic losses. Finally, the client needed a supplier with proven experience in large-scale mining projects, as inexperienced suppliers might fail to understand the specific needs of mining operations and provide unsuitable products.
Prior to cooperating with us, the client had encountered difficulties with other suppliers: some could not provide valid UL certifications, some offered wires that failed to withstand the high-altitude environment, and others could not meet the tight delivery schedule. This led the client to prioritize reliability, certification, and efficiency when selecting a new supplier.
2. Selecting the Right Wires for the Mining Environment
After in-depth communication with the client and a detailed analysis of the project’s requirements, we customized a solution centered on three core wire products, each selected for its unique advantages that addressed the client’s specific pain points. We explained the differences between our products and other alternatives, helping the client understand why our recommendations were the best fit for their project.
First, we recommended THWN Wire for the project’s power distribution systems in wet and semi-wet areas, such as the ore washing workshops and outdoor power cabinets. Our THWN conductor UL83 standard wire features PVC insulation and a nylon jacket for superior moisture and abrasion resistance. Unlike ordinary PVC wires, which tend to become brittle in extreme temperature changes, our THWN Wire can operate stably at 75°C in wet locations and 90°C in dry locations, with a short-circuit temperature resistance of up to 150°C—a critical feature for the mine’s variable temperature environment. We provided THWN Wire in sizes ranging from 14 AWG to 4/0 AWG, suitable for different current loads, ensuring stable power supply to key equipment.

Second, we supplied XHHW Wire for the mine’s high-temperature and high-voltage areas, including the main power distribution room and the motor connections of large mining machinery. XHHW Wire uses cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which offers superior thermal stability and chemical resistance compared to THWN Wire. Unlike THWN’s thermoplastic insulation, which softens at high temperatures, XLPE insulation retains its shape and performance even at 90°C in both wet and dry conditions, making it ideal for high-heat applications such as mining machinery motors. Our XHHW Wire, available in 1 AWG to 500 MCM sizes, also has a higher voltage rating (up to 1000V) than standard THWN Wire (600V), supporting the mine’s high-voltage power transmission needs. This choice eliminated the client’s concerns about wire degradation in high-temperature environments, which could lead to equipment failure and safety hazards.
Third, we provided Control Cables (Type TC-ER) for the project’s control systems, which are responsible for transmitting signals between the control room and various mining equipment (such as crushers, conveyors, and sensors). Type TC-ER Control Cables are designed for industrial environments, with a 600V rating and a PVC jacket that is resistant to oils, chemicals, and abrasion—essential for the mine’s dusty and chemical-rich environment. We supplied Type TC-ER cables with 4 to 12 conductors, each 18 AWG to 12 AWG, ensuring stable signal transmission without interference. Unlike Type TC cables, Type TC-ER cables are suitable for direct burial and aerial installation, providing greater flexibility in the mine’s complex layout. This flexibility allowed the client to install the control cables in various locations without additional protection, reducing installation costs and time.
3. UL Certification and Strict Quality Control
For the Las Bambas expansion project, safety was the top priority, and our UL certification and strict quality control system were key factors in winning the client’s trust. All our wires—including the THWN conductor UL83 standard wire, XHHW Wire, and Control Cables—are UL certified, meaning they have passed rigorous testing for electrical performance, fire resistance, and environmental durability. This certification was critical for the client, as it ensured compliance with Peru’s local electrical safety regulations and international mining standards, avoiding potential legal and safety risks.
In addition to UL certification, we implemented a strict quality control process throughout the production cycle. From the selection of raw materials (high-purity copper conductors and high-quality insulation materials) to the final inspection before delivery, every step was monitored by professional technicians. We conducted tests on each batch of wires, including voltage resistance, insulation resistance, and temperature resistance, to ensure they met the project’s requirements. For example, our THWN Wire passed the UL 83 standard’s flame retardant test (VW-1 rated), ensuring it would not spread fire in the event of a short circuit—a critical safety feature in the mine’s flammable environment. Our quality control measures eliminated the client’s concerns about product defects, which could lead to equipment downtime and safety accidents.
Furthermore, our extensive experience in similar mining projects gave the client additional confidence. We have previously supplied wires for mining projects in Chile, Brazil, and other South American countries, understanding the unique environmental and regulatory requirements of the region. This experience allowed us to anticipate potential issues and provide proactive solutions, ensuring the project’s smooth progress.
4. Efficient Logistics to Meet Tight Schedules
The client emphasized that on-time delivery was crucial to the expansion project’s schedule, as any delay would disrupt the construction timeline and result in significant losses. To meet this requirement, we optimized our production and logistics processes to ensure efficient delivery without compromising quality.
First, we prioritized the production of the Las Bambas project, allocating dedicated production lines and personnel to ensure the wires were manufactured within the required timeframe. We maintained close communication with the client throughout the production process, providing regular updates on production progress and addressing any questions promptly. Second, we partnered with reliable international logistics companies with experience in exporting to Peru, ensuring the wires were transported safely and efficiently. We handled all customs clearance procedures, including preparing the necessary documents (certifications, invoices, and shipping documents) to avoid delays at the port. The wires were shipped from Shenzhen Port to the Port of Matarani in Peru, and then transported by land to the Las Bambas mine site. Despite the long distance and complex logistics, we delivered all products on time, meeting the client’s construction schedule.
5. Stable Operation and Client Satisfaction
Since the completion of the wire installation in late 2025, the Las Bambas expansion project has been operating smoothly. Our THWN Wire, XHHW Wire, and Control Cables (Type TC-ER) have performed exceptionally well in the harsh high-altitude environment, with no equipment failures or safety incidents related to electrical wires. The THWN Wire has maintained stable performance in wet areas, the XHHW Wire has withstood the high temperatures of mining machinery, and the Type TC-ER Control Cables have ensured accurate signal transmission between the control room and equipment.
The client was highly satisfied with our solution, particularly our UL-certified products, on-time delivery, and professional service. The reliable performance of our wires has helped the client complete the expansion project on schedule, increasing the mine’s production capacity as planned. The client also noted that our wires were easier to install than those from previous suppliers, thanks to the smooth nylon jacket of the THWN Wire and the flexibility of the Type TC-ER Control Cables, which reduced installation time and labor costs.
