In 2024, Colombia’s power sector embarked on a critical infrastructure upgrade with the construction of the 500/220 kV Chilca Substation (Chilca Substation) in Lima. As a key project to enhance the stability of the local high-voltage power grid and meet the growing electricity demand of surrounding industrial and residential areas, the project had strict requirements for electrical wires—reliability, compliance with international standards, and cost-effectiveness were non-negotiable. Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. was honored to be the designated wire supplier for this project, providing high-quality, UL-certified wires that solved the client’s core pain points and ensured the smooth progress of the substation construction.
1. Challenges Faced by the Chilca Substation Construction Team
The Chilca Substation project, located in Lima, Colombia, is a large-scale high-voltage power infrastructure project undertaken by a local leading power engineering company. Its main function is to convert 500 kV high-voltage electricity into 220 kV medium-voltage electricity for transmission to nearby industrial zones and urban areas, playing a pivotal role in optimizing Colombia’s power distribution network. However, during the early preparation stage, the project team encountered several key challenges that threatened the project’s progress and quality.
First, the substation operates in a high-voltage environment, requiring wires that can withstand extreme electrical loads and harsh environmental conditions—Lima’s hot and humid climate, coupled with occasional heavy rainfall, demands wires with excellent moisture resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. Second, as an important infrastructure project, the client had strict requirements for product certification: all wires must hold UL certification to meet the safety standards of the U.S. and Latin American power industries, ensuring long-term safe operation without potential safety hazards. Third, the client struggled to find a supplier that could balance quality, certification, and cost—many international suppliers offered either certified but overpriced products or low-cost but uncertified wires that failed to meet project standards. Finally, the project had a tight construction schedule, and the client needed a supplier with rich project experience to provide accurate product specifications, timely delivery, and professional technical support to avoid delays.
After extensive market research and comparison, the client chose Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. because of our strong strength in product quality, complete certification system, rich experience in undertaking large-scale substation projects, and high-cost performance—all of which perfectly matched the project’s core needs.
2. Matching High-Quality Wires to Project Needs
Based on the Chilca Substation’s operational requirements and the client’s pain points, our team conducted in-depth communication with the project’s electrical engineers, analyzed the specific application scenarios of each type of wire, and provided a tailored wire supply solution, focusing on four core wire types: Instrumentation Cables (Type TC), SIS Cable, Bare Copper, and XHHW-2. Each product was selected for its unique advantages, addressing the client’s concerns about quality, safety, and applicability.
For the substation’s signal transmission system, we recommended Instrumentation Cables (Type TC) instead of Type MC-HL. The key difference between Type TC and Type MC-HL lies in their structure and application scenarios: Type MC-HL is mainly designed for heavy-duty industrial environments with armor protection, which is unnecessary for the substation’s internal signal transmission and would increase unnecessary costs. In contrast, Type TC features a flame-retardant cross-linked polyethylene (FR-XLPE) insulation and a thermoset chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) jacket, making it lightweight, flexible, and easy to install in tight spaces inside the substation. We provided Type TC in sizes 14 AWG (7 strands) to 8 AWG (7 strands), with 4 to 12 conductors, which are ideal for transmitting precise signals between the substation’s control system and monitoring equipment. Its silicone-free design ensures no interference with sensitive instrumentation, and it can operate continuously at 90°C in both wet and dry locations, perfectly adapting to Lima’s climate.
For the substation’s switchboard interconnection and protective device operation, we supplied SIS Cable, a specialty cable designed specifically for utility substation switchboards and Class 1E low-voltage applications. We provided SIS Cable in sizes 18 AWG to 2 AWG, with tinned annealed copper conductors and FR-XLPE insulation that is heat, moisture, and radiation resistant. Compared to ordinary control cables, SIS Cable has higher flame resistance (meeting VW-1 vertical flame test standards) and better electrical stability, ensuring reliable operation of the substation’s protective devices—critical for preventing electrical faults and ensuring grid safety. Its gray insulation color also facilitates identification and maintenance during the project and later operation.
For the substation’s grounding system and overhead distribution lines, we provided Bare Copper conductors, which are essential for ensuring electrical safety and reducing the risk of lightning strikes. We supplied Bare Copper in sizes ranging from 250 kcmil to 750 kcmil, with concentric stranded construction complying with ASTM B3 and ASTM B8 standards. Bare Copper was chosen over other conductive materials because of its excellent electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and ductility—unlike aluminum conductors, it does not oxidize easily, ensuring long-term grounding performance and reducing maintenance costs. The 350 kcmil Bare Copper conductors we provided were specifically used for the substation’s main grounding bus, ensuring efficient dissipation of fault current and protecting equipment and personnel safety.
For the substation’s power distribution lines, we supplied XHHW-2 cables, including the key product 350 kcmil XHHW-2 industrial cable. XHHW-2 is a flame-retardant polyolefin-insulated power cable with XLPE insulation, which is formed by cross-linking PE material to form a mesh structure, giving it excellent heat resistance, pressure resistance, and environmental crack resistance. The 350 kcmil XHHW-2 industrial cable we provided has a conductor structure of 37 strands of 2.47 mm copper wire, an insulation thickness of 1.65 mm, and an outer diameter of 20.72 mm, capable of withstanding 600V voltage and operating continuously at 90°C. Compared to ordinary PVC-insulated cables, XHHW-2 has better heat resistance (can withstand 130°C in emergency overload and 250°C in short circuit conditions) and longer service life, making it suitable for the substation’s high-voltage power distribution needs. Its direct burial capability also eliminated the need for additional protective conduits in some installation scenarios, reducing the client’s construction costs and time.

3. UL Certification and Strict Quality Control
Safety is the top priority for high-voltage substation projects, and our core advantage lies in our complete certification system and strict quality control process—all wires supplied for the Chilca Substation project hold UL certification, complying with UL 1277 , UL 44 , and ASTM standards. This UL certification was a key factor in the client’s decision to choose us, as it directly demonstrates that our products meet the strict safety and performance requirements of the U.S. and Latin American power industries, eliminating the client’s concerns about product non-compliance and potential safety risks.
In addition to certification, we implemented strict quality control throughout the production process. From the selection of raw materials—we use high-purity copper conductors (complying with ASTM B3) and high-quality XLPE insulation materials—to the production, testing, and packaging stages, each step is supervised by professional quality inspectors. For example, all XHHW-2 cables undergo insulation thickness testing, voltage withstand testing, and flame resistance testing before leaving the factory; Bare Copper conductors are tested for electrical conductivity and breaking load to ensure they meet project specifications. We also provided the client with detailed test reports for each batch of products, allowing them to verify quality at any time and ensuring full transparency in the supply process.
4. Efficient Cooperation to Ensure Project Progress
Understanding the tight construction schedule of the Chilca Substation project, we prioritized this order in our production plan and established a dedicated project team to coordinate production, testing, and logistics. Before production, our technical team communicated with the client’s engineers again to confirm all product specifications, including conductor size, number of strands, insulation thickness, and packaging requirements, to avoid any errors.
During production, we provided the client with real-time updates on production progress, allowing them to grasp the delivery timeline and make corresponding construction arrangements. After production was completed, we arranged for professional logistics services to transport the wires from Dongguan, China, to Lima, Colombia, ensuring that the products arrived in good condition and on time. We also provided detailed installation guidelines for each type of wire, including installation precautions for Type TC Instrumentation Cables in tight spaces and grounding requirements for Bare Copper conductors, helping the client’s construction team complete the installation efficiently and correctly. Our after-sales team was also on call 24/7 to answer any technical questions during installation, ensuring that the project was not delayed due to wire-related issues.
