In 2024, we partnered with a leading engineering firm overseeing the modernization and expansion of the Barranquilla Oil Refinery in Barranquilla, Colombia—a critical project aimed at upgrading the refinery’s infrastructure, increasing production capacity, and meeting strict local and international safety standards for the petroleum industry. As a key supplier of electrical wires for this large-scale industrial project, we successfully addressed the client’s core pain points, delivered high-quality UL-certified products, and established a seamless cooperation model that set a benchmark for wire exports to Latin American industrial projects. This case study details how our expertise, product advantages, and localized service helped drive the project’s success.
1. Challenges in Finding a Reliable Wire Supplier for Industrial Expansion
The Barranquilla Oil Refinery, one of Colombia’s most important petroleum processing facilities, launched its modernization and expansion project in early 2024 to adapt to growing domestic energy demand and comply with stricter environmental and safety regulations. The project involved upgrading existing production lines, adding new processing units, and expanding the refinery’s electrical system—all of which required large quantities of high-performance, certified electrical wires that could withstand the harsh industrial environment of a refinery, including high temperatures, humidity, and potential exposure to oil and chemical substances.
Before partnering with us, the client faced several critical challenges. First, they struggled to find a supplier that could provide wires with valid UL certification—a mandatory requirement for electrical components in Colombian industrial projects, as it ensures compliance with international safety standards and avoids delays in customs clearance and project approval. Many potential suppliers either lacked UL certification or could not provide the detailed product specifications needed for the refinery’s high-demand applications. Second, language barriers slowed down communication significantly; most suppliers did not have Spanish-speaking teams, leading to misunderstandings about project requirements, product details, and delivery timelines. Third, the client needed a supplier with extensive experience in large-scale industrial projects, as the refinery expansion required precise product matching, on-time delivery, and technical support to ensure the wires integrated seamlessly with the existing electrical system. Finally, the client needed to choose between different wire types to meet specific application needs, but lacked clear guidance on which products would perform best in different areas of the refinery.
2. Matching the Right Wires to Project Needs
After learning about the client’s challenges, we conducted a detailed analysis of the refinery’s expansion plans, including the specific electrical requirements of each processing unit, environmental conditions, and safety standards. We recommended three core wire products—MV-90 Cable, MC Cable, and XHHW Cable—each selected for their unique advantages that addressed the client’s specific needs, and explained clearly why these products were superior to alternative options.
TheMV-90 Cable was chosen for the refinery’s medium-voltage power distribution system. Available in sizes ranging from 1/0 AWG to 500 kcmil, this cable features a 90°C continuous operating temperature rating (130°C emergency rating) and is UL-listed (per UL 1072), making it ideal for high-temperature industrial environments like refineries. Unlike standard medium-voltage cables, the MV-90 Cable has excellent resistance to oil, acids, and alkalies, as well as superior moisture resistance—critical for a facility located near coastal waters where humidity and corrosion risks are high. Its compact stranded copper conductor ensures efficient power transmission, while its sunlight-resistant jacket makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations in the refinery’s open areas.
For the refinery’s electrical wiring in confined spaces, such as control rooms and equipment enclosures, we recommended MC Cable (Metal-Clad Cable) in sizes 12 AWG to 3/0 AWG. This cable is UL-certified and features a metal armor that provides mechanical protection against physical damage, which is essential in busy industrial environments where wires may be exposed to heavy equipment or construction activities. Unlike non-metallic cables, MC Cable is flame-retardant (passing UL and IEEE 383 vertical tray flame tests) and can be installed in cable trays without additional protection, reducing installation time and costs. Its flexibility also makes it easy to route through tight spaces, adapting to the refinery’s complex wiring layout.
The third key product we supplied was XHHW Cable, including the 4 AWG XHHW electric cable—a critical component for the refinery’s low-voltage power circuits. This XLPE wire (cross-linked polyethylene insulated wire) is UL-certified, has a 90°C operating temperature rating, and offers excellent electrical performance with low dielectric loss, ensuring efficient power transmission with minimal energy waste. The 4 AWG size was specifically selected for areas requiring higher current-carrying capacity, such as the refinery’s pump stations and heating units. Compared to PVC-insulated wires, XHHW Cable is more durable, resistant to heat and chemicals, and has a longer service life—making it a cost-effective choice for long-term industrial use. Its non-halogen insulation also reduces environmental impact, aligning with the refinery’s sustainability goals.

Throughout the solution design process, our Spanish-speaking team communicated directly with the client, eliminating language barriers and ensuring that every requirement was fully understood. We provided detailed product datasheets, UL certification documents, and technical specifications in both Spanish and English, helping the client make informed decisions and streamline the approval process.
3. UL Certification and Strict Quality Control
Safety is the top priority in the petroleum industry, and the client’s biggest concern was ensuring that all electrical components met international safety standards. Our core advantage in this project was our full range of UL certifications for all supplied wires—MV-90 Cable, MC Cable, and XHHW Cable are all UL-listed, meaning they have undergone rigorous testing to meet the highest safety standards for electrical performance, flame resistance, and environmental durability. This certification was critical for the client, as it ensured compliance with Colombian industrial regulations and avoided the risk of customs delays or project shutdowns due to non-compliant products.
In addition to UL certification, we implemented strict quality control measures throughout the production process. We used high-quality raw materials, including pure copper conductors and XLPE insulation, to ensure product durability and performance. Each batch of wires was tested for electrical conductivity, insulation resistance, and flame retardancy before shipment, with test reports provided to the client for verification. Our quality control team also conducted on-site inspections during production to ensure consistency and adherence to the client’s specifications. This commitment to quality gave the client confidence that the wires would perform reliably in the refinery’s harsh environment, reducing the risk of electrical failures and safety hazards.
4. Seamless Coordination and On-Time Delivery
Given the scale of the refinery expansion project, timely delivery of wires was crucial to avoiding project delays. We leveraged our extensive experience in large-scale industrial projects to develop a detailed delivery plan, coordinating with logistics partners to ensure smooth transportation from our factory in Dongguan to the Barranquilla refinery. We handled all export documentation, including customs declarations, UL certification verification, and shipping documents, to streamline the customs clearance process in Colombia.
Our Spanish-speaking team maintained constant communication with the client and logistics partners, providing real-time updates on shipment status and addressing any potential issues promptly. We also prepared for unexpected challenges, such as changes in shipping routes or customs requirements, to ensure that delivery remained on schedule.
