In 2022, the global wave of low-carbon transformation swept across Europe. As a "high-standard benchmark" in the global photovoltaic (PV) industry, Switzerland was accelerating the popularization of commercial building PV systems. Zurich, the economic core of Switzerland, witnessed numerous commercial complexes launching rooftop PV renovation projects. Behind this trend lies extremely stringent requirements for every core component of the PV system. Against this backdrop, our team successfully undertook the Swiss High-Standard Commercial Rooftop PV 2022 project (Zurich Commercial Rooftop PV 2022) with our experience in the wire export field and rich capabilities in undertaking similar projects. We provided a full set of customized wire export solutions for the rooftop PV system of this commercial complex, solving multiple challenges in the Swiss market with professionalism and quality, and setting a benchmark for Chinese wire exports to the Swiss PV market.
I. The "High-Standard Code" of the Swiss PV Market and Core Project Challenges
To understand the value of this project, it is first necessary to grasp the uniqueness of the Swiss PV market—it is not only a high-price, high-return high-quality market but also a "test ground" with nearly harsh requirements for quality, safety, and compliance. Unlike ordinary PV markets, commercial rooftop PV projects in Switzerland adhere to three core principles from design and material selection to construction, which became the primary directions for our team to tackle after undertaking the project.
First, the "international threshold" of safety and compliance. Switzerland’s requirements for electrical safety in commercial buildings far exceed conventional standards. Rooftop PV systems must not only comply with local regulations but also pass internationally authoritative certifications, and meet the strict terms of commercial building insurance companies—if core components such as wires lack complete certifications or are of substandard quality, the project will not only fail acceptance but also face the risk of high insurance claims. More importantly, as a key node for transnational projects, the customer hoped that the selected products could adapt to the future expansion needs of European, North American and other markets, which requires the wires to have globally recognized certification qualifications.
Second, the "adaptation challenge" of complex scenarios. The carrier of this project is a commercial complex in the core business district of Zurich. The rooftop has complex layers, extremely narrow wiring space, and a special structure, which strictly limits the bending radius during wiring. At the same time, Switzerland has cold winters with heavy snowfall and strong ultraviolet radiation in summer. Wires exposed outdoors for a long time need to withstand severe cold of -40℃, intense ultraviolet radiation, and erosion by rain and snow, which places extremely high requirements on the weather resistance and flexibility of the wires.
Third, the "reliability requirements" for long-term operation. The design life of commercial rooftop PV projects in Switzerland generally reaches 20–25 years. This means that wires, as the "blood vessels" of the PV system, must have extremely strong anti-aging and anti-fault capabilities, and be easy to maintain—after all, rooftop maintenance costs are high. Replacing wires is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but also may damage the rooftop waterproof layer, causing additional losses. In addition, commercial buildings have high requirements for rooftop aesthetics, and messy wiring will affect the overall visual effect of the building, which is also one of the core demands clearly put forward by the customer.
The customer of this cooperation is a leading local Swiss enterprise specializing in commercial building PV system integration. Previously, it had encountered problems such as difficult wiring and insufficient weather resistance due to the use of ordinary wires. Therefore, when selecting suppliers, it paid special attention to the certification, adaptability, weather resistance, and delivery efficiency of the products. After multiple rounds of comparison, the customer finally chose our team, mainly because we can accurately match the high standards of the Swiss market and provide "full pain point coverage" customized solutions, rather than just simple product supply.
II. Wire Solutions Suitable for Project Needs
Faced with multiple project challenges, our team designed three core types of wire products according to the project background and customer pain points. The parameters and design of each product correspond to the specific needs of the project, truly achieving "on-demand customization and precise adaptation."
To meet the project’s core safety and compliance needs and the customer’s future international market expansion plan, we equipped the key lines from the Photovoltaic Array to the Combiner Box with TUV & UL4703 certified single-core PV cables. The reason why this cable has become our core competitiveness is that its dual certifications perfectly meet the requirements of the Swiss market—the TUV certification (File No.B 126326 0001 Rev.00) ensures compliance with European safety standards, and the UL4703 certification (File No. E486460) enhances the international versatility of the product. Compared with products with only TUV certification, it can easily pass the clause review of Swiss insurance companies and clear the regulatory adaptation obstacles for the customer’s future expansion into the North American market.

From the perspective of wiring scenarios, the lines from the PV array to the combiner box are divided into short series and main series. Therefore, we designed two cross-sectional specifications: 4 mm² and 6 mm²—4 mm² is suitable for shorter series lines, balancing economy and conductivity; 6 mm² is suitable for main series lines, which can meet the needs of high-load transmission. Both adopt a rated voltage of 1000 V DC, matching the DC transmission needs of the PV system. At the same time, considering the flexibility requirements of rooftop wiring and the climatic characteristics of Switzerland, we used tinned copper conductors (Tinned Copper Conductor) with XLPO insulation + XLPO sheath. This not only endows the cable with excellent UV resistance, cold resistance, and moisture resistance but also greatly improves flexibility, which can easily adapt to the complex wiring of multi-layer rooftops and avoid damage to the rooftop waterproof layer due to rigid wiring.
To meet the high-current transmission needs from the combiner box to the inverter (Combiner Box → Inverter) and the wiring difficulties in narrow rooftop spaces, we equipped highly flexible multi-core PV Inverter Connection Cables. It also uses tinned copper conductors to ensure conductivity and oxidation resistance, and the insulation/sheath is made of XLPE/XLPO material, continuing the weather resistance advantage, which can operate stably in an environment of -40℃ to 80℃. Considering that the lines between the combiner box and the inverter need to bear higher current, we designed two cross-sectional specifications:6 mm² and 10 mm², which can be flexibly matched according to the transmission distance and current size. More importantly, the bending radius of this cable is much lower than the industry standard, which can flexibly turn in narrow spaces without additional rooftop structure modification, greatly reducing construction difficulty and costs.
For the transmission of combiner box monitoring and inverter control signals, we selected RVV or shielded multi-core control cables with cross-sectional specifications of 2×1.5 mm² and 4×1.5 mm²—the reason for choosing these two specifications is that they can accurately match the transmission needs of control signals, ensuring signal stability without causing resource waste. The biggest advantage of this cable is its strong anti-interference ability, which can effectively avoid electromagnetic interference generated during the operation of the PV system and ensure the accurate transmission of control signals. At the same time, its flexible design can also adapt to the narrow wiring space of commercial rooftops, forming a perfect match with the overall wiring plan.
In addition, to meet the customer’s demand for rooftop aesthetics, all our PV cables adopt a black sheath design, which can perfectly integrate with the rooftop PV modules and building appearance, effectively hiding the wiring and avoiding messy wiring affecting the overall visual effect. At the same time, the black sheath can further enhance UV resistance, achieving a "win-win situation of aesthetics and performance." All products have passed strict tests such as low-temperature resistance, UV resistance, and moisture resistance, and other supporting wires also have IEC national standard certification, ensuring quality from the source, matching the 25-year design life of the project, and completely solving the customer’s worries about long-term reliability.
III. How We Solve Core Project Challenges with Professionalism
After receiving the project, our team did not rush to start production. Instead, we first conducted an in-depth on-site investigation, combined with the characteristics of the Swiss market and customer pain points, and formulated an implementation plan of "precise breakthrough and full-process escort," deeply binding product advantages with project needs to solve the challenges faced by the customer one by one.
In terms of safety and compliance, we not only provided products with dual certifications but also sorted out complete certification documents and test reports in advance to assist the customer in docking with insurance companies and project audit departments, ensuring the smooth passing of the project’s safety audit—which is also one of the core reasons why the customer chose us. Compared with other suppliers that only provide products without compliance support, our team followed up the compliance process throughout, saving the customer a lot of communication costs and completely avoiding the risk of project delay due to inconsistent certifications.
In terms of complex wiring, our technical team formulated a detailed wiring plan in advance, planned the optimal wiring route according to the flexible characteristics of each cable, avoided line crossing and winding, and realized efficient wiring in narrow spaces by using the advantage of the cable’s small bending radius. During the construction period, we also arranged professional technical personnel to provide remote guidance, timely solving the wiring problems encountered by the customer. Compared with the ordinary rigid wires previously used by the customer, our solution increased the construction efficiency by 30% and completely avoided damage to the rooftop waterproof layer caused by wiring.
In terms of weather resistance and long-term reliability, our products have undergone strict control from materials to processes—tinned copper conductors are anti-oxidation and corrosion-resistant, XLPO insulation sheaths are UV-resistant and low-temperature resistant, and coupled with multiple pre-factory tests (conductor resistance, insulation performance, voltage resistance, etc.), we ensure that each batch of products can adapt to the complex climatic environment of Switzerland. To make the customer more assured, we also provided a long-term quality guarantee commitment, ensuring that the wires will not have aging, cracking, and other faults within the 25-year project life, minimizing the customer’s long-term operation and maintenance costs.
In terms of maintenance and aesthetics, we adopted prefabricated terminals and modular wiring design, completing the prefabrication of wire terminals in advance, so no additional on-site processing is required. If replacement or maintenance is needed later, modular components can be directly disassembled without large-scale wire removal, increasing maintenance efficiency by 60% and reducing maintenance costs by 40%. The black sheath design perfectly meets the aesthetic needs of commercial buildings and has been highly recognized by the customer and the project party.
IV. Efficient Performance, Creating a Win-Win Industry Benchmark
As a transnational export project, delivery cycle and logistics transportation are the focus of the customer’s attention and also the key link that our team focuses on. After the order was confirmed, we immediately launched the production plan, prioritized the allocation of production resources, accurately controlled the production progress according to the project needs, and ensured that all products were produced and tested within the specified time. At the same time, we docked with professional cross-border logistics service providers in advance, optimized the logistics route, avoided international logistics risks, and ensured that the products were safely and quickly delivered to the Zurich project site, with a delivery punctuality rate of 100%.
During the construction period, our technical team provided full-process remote support, timely answering the customer’s questions about product installation and wiring, ensuring the smooth progress of the construction. Finally, with the full cooperation of our team, the project successfully completed construction and acceptance, and has been operating stably for many years. All performance indicators have met the design standards, truly achieving the goals of "safety, efficiency, reliability, and aesthetics."
From the customer’s perspective, our solution not only perfectly solved all the pain points it faced, such as safety compliance, complex wiring, and insufficient weather resistance but also helped the customer reduce construction costs and long-term operation and maintenance costs. At the same time, it provided convenience for its future expansion into the international market and enhanced its competitiveness in the Swiss PV market. From the project’s perspective, this project has become a typical case of commercial rooftop PV in Zurich, providing reference experience for similar local projects and contributing to Switzerland’s low-carbon transformation. From our team’s perspective, through this project, we further familiarized ourselves with the high-standard requirements of the Swiss PV market, accumulated more experience in transnational project services, and demonstrated the quality advantages and international competitiveness of Chinese wire products.
