Project Background
In 2024, the Punta Huete Airport renovation and expansion project officially commenced in Managua, Nicaragua, as a key infrastructure initiative to upgrade regional aviation transportation capacity. This project includes terminal reconstruction, navigation lighting system upgrading, power distribution network renovation, and fire safety system optimization, aiming to meet international civil aviation safety standards and accommodate increased passenger and cargo traffic.
Located in a tropical climate zone, the airport area faces long-term high temperature, heavy humidity, strong ultraviolet radiation, and occasional soil moisture accumulation. Meanwhile, civil aviation projects impose strict requirements on electrical safety, fire performance, electromagnetic compatibility, and certification compliance. Taugh Challenges
The EPC contractor of the Punta Huete Airport project faced several prominent pain points in electrical supporting construction. First, ordinary wires could not adapt to the tropical climate, with risks of insulation aging, cracking, and short circuit under long-term humidity and high temperature. Second, civil aviation scenarios required high flame retardancy and low smoke characteristics to ensure personnel safety in case of emergency. Third, all electrical materials must have complete international certifications to pass airport acceptance and local regulatory review. In addition, the project had a tight construction period, requiring fast production and on-time delivery without delaying the overall progress.

Customized Cable Solutions for Airport Scenarios
Combined with the design drawings and actual working conditions of Punta Huete Airport, Dongguan GERITEL formulated a targeted cable application plan, covering main power supply, outdoor lighting, control signal, fire protection system and other links. The core cables used include XHHW-2 electric wire power cable, MC Cable, PLTC, and other certified products, with complete specifications to match different power demand scenarios.
XHHW‑2, its cross‑linked polyethylene (XLPE) is rated 90°C wet and dry, certified under UL 44, is mainly used for outdoor runway lighting systems, oil depot power supply, and main power branch lines of the terminal. With a rated voltage of 600V and XLPE insulation material, it supports stable operation at 90°C in both dry and humid environments. We supplied specifications from 8 AWG to 4/0 AWG, including 1/C 6 AWG for navigation lighting circuits and 3/C 2 AWG for terminal power distribution. Compared with ordinary PVC wires, XHHW-2 has stronger UV resistance, moisture resistance, and corrosion resistance, effectively avoiding insulation damage caused by long-term exposure and humidity, which is highly suitable for open-air and semi-open-air areas of the airport.
MC Cable (Metal Clad Cable) certified to UL 1569 is applied to indoor power transmission of the terminal, including power supply for air conditioning, lighting, escalators and other important equipment. Adopting metal armored structure, it has excellent mechanical protection performance, resists extrusion and impact during construction, and can be directly laid without additional conduits, improving construction efficiency. The flame retardant performance meets VW-1 standard, which meets the strict fire protection requirements of public buildings in airports.
PLTC Tray Cable certified under UL 13 is used for control and signal transmission of the airport’s intelligent system, including navigation equipment monitoring, fire alarm system, baggage handling device control, etc. We provide shielded types of 4 pairs to 12 pairs 18 AWG, which effectively resist electromagnetic interference and ensure stable transmission of navigation and security signals. Low smoke and halogen-free materials reduce harmful gas emission in case of fire, complying with international civil aviation safety specifications.
