Ghana Agona Solar PV Project
GERITEL
Apr 24,2026
In the wave of West Africa's photovoltaic (PV) industry development, Ghana has become one of the most commercially promising PV markets in the region, thanks to its relatively improved power infrastructure, stable policy environment, and abundant PV resources. Unlike neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Sierra Leone with weak power facilities, Ghana's power grid coverage has reached 83%, especially in urban and central industrial areas, where the grid connection conditions are superior, laying a solid foundation for the implementation of large-scale PV projects. In 2025, we successfully partnered with the Ghana Agona Large-Scale Ground-Mounted PV Power Plant (Ghana Agona Solar PV Project) to complete the export supply of a full set of high-specification cables. With high-quality products adapted to the local environment, efficient delivery capabilities, and practical project-specific solutions, we helped the power plant successfully complete construction and put it into operation. This not only won high recognition from the project party but also became a benchmark for China's high-quality cable exports to the West African PV market. Centered on the core of "high-quality cables empowering West African PV projects", this case integrates real project scenarios to interpret the application value of products and demonstrate our strength and advantages in the field of PV cable exports. The core keywords include PV wire export and Ghana PV project cable solution.
I. The Urgent Need for the Agona PV Power Plant Under Ghana's Energy Transition
In recent years, the Ghanaian government has continuously promoted energy structure transformation, vigorously developing renewable energy with the support of the Renewable Energy Act 2011. Among them, the PV industry has become a key development area due to its strong adaptability and quick results. Ghana's national average annual solar radiation reaches 5–6 kWh/m²/day, and the central region even reaches 5.5 kWh/m²/day, with sufficient and evenly distributed sunlight, making it an ideal area for building large-scale ground-mounted PV power plants. As a core industrial hub in central Ghana, the Agona region is surrounded by a large number of manufacturing and processing enterprises, with strong industrial electricity demand. However, the long-standing problem of tight power supply and large fluctuations during peak hours in the local power grid has restricted the development of local industry, and also made the local government and investors see the huge potential of PV projects.
The Ghana Agona Large-Scale Ground-Mounted PV Power Plant was jointly invested and constructed by local Ghanaian private enterprises and European foreign capital institutions, with a total installed capacity of 100MW and a total investment of approximately 120 million US dollars. As a key renewable energy project in central Ghana in 2025, it is expected to generate 160 million kWh of electricity annually after completion, which can meet the electricity needs of 300,000 residents and more than 200 small and medium-sized enterprises in the Agona region and its surrounding areas. At the same time, it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 120,000 tons per year, helping Ghana achieve its national goal of "10% renewable energy share by 2030". The project received partial financing support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an affiliate of the World Bank. The financing institution has strict requirements on the quality and certification standards of project equipment. In particular, as the "blood vessels" of the PV system, cables directly affect the project's return on investment (ROI) and long-term operational safety, becoming a core consideration for the project party in selecting suppliers.
Based on actual project research, we found that the practical challenges facing the Agona Power Plant are far beyond expectations: although the local power grid infrastructure is relatively improved, the voltage fluctuation range can reach more than 15% during peak industrial electricity consumption periods. If the cable's voltage shock resistance is insufficient, it is very likely to cause inverter failures and affect the normal power generation of the power plant. At the same time, the Agona region is only 40 kilometers away from the coastline, belonging to a typical coastal hot and humid climate with an average annual humidity of more than 80%. The salt in the air is highly corrosive, and ordinary cables exposed outdoors for a long time are prone to sheath aging, conductor oxidation and other problems, which greatly increase the later operation and maintenance costs. In addition, the project construction area is dominated by gentle hills, with a PV module array laying area of 1,800 mu, long cable routing distance and many nodes. The construction level of local EPC contractors is uneven, which puts extremely high requirements on the standardization and ease of installation of cables. As a foreign-invested cooperative enterprise, the project party has clear requirements for the investment return cycle. The initial equipment investment needs to balance quality and cost-effectiveness to avoid prolonging the return cycle due to equipment failures. Coupled with the tight project schedule, this requires cable suppliers to have rapid response and efficient delivery capabilities to ensure that the overall construction progress is not affected.
After multiple rounds of screening and comparison, the project party finally chose us as the core cable supplier. The core reason is that we have been deeply engaged in the PV cable field for many years, with rich experience in serving large-scale PV projects, our products have passed international authoritative certifications, and we can provide customized solutions combined with local climate and power grid characteristics to accurately match the core needs of the project. Based on the project's 100MW installed capacity, 1,800 mu module laying area, and the layout density of the module array, we have accurately calculated and equipped the project with a total of about 550 kilometers of H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables, of which 320 kilometers are 4mm² specifications, mainly used for series connection between short-distance modules, and 230 kilometers are 6mm² specifications, used for confluence connection between module arrays and inverters. The sufficient quantity and accurate specification matching ensure that the power transmission of the entire PV system is free of dead ends and efficient.
II. Scenario-Based Application
We abandon the traditional mode of stacking product parameters and integrate all cable products into the actual construction and operation scenarios of the Agona Power Plant. The selection and application of each product specifically solves the specific problems faced by the project, making the product value intuitively reflected, which is also the core advantage that makes us stand out. The PV module array of the Agona Power Plant is laid in gentle hilly areas, and 550 kilometers of H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables need to cover the entire 1,800-mu construction area. Some areas need to be directly laid on the ground and exposed outdoors, enduring strong ultraviolet radiation and hot and humid climate erosion for a long time. Different from ordinary PV cables, the H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables we provide hold the TÜV EN 50618 certificate (Certificate No. B 126326 0001 Rev.00) and comply with IEC international standards, specially designed for harsh outdoor environments. Its black and red sheath design is convenient for local EPC contractors to distinguish positive and negative poles, reducing wiring errors and improving construction efficiency. The cross-linked environmentally friendly copolymer sheath has excellent high temperature resistance, UV resistance and corrosion resistance, which can resist strong sunlight and coastal salt erosion. The matching of 4mm² and 6mm² specifications accurately meets the needs of module series connection and confluence, with transmission loss controlled within 3%. Moreover, no additional protective sleeve is needed, which is suitable for wiring in hilly terrain, greatly reducing construction difficulty and material costs, and has been highly recognized by local EPC contractors. As the "heart" of the PV system, the inverter's confluence to the medium-voltage distribution network is directly related to the stability of power transmission.

To address the problem of large voltage fluctuations in the local power grid in Agona, the YJV and NA2XY medium-voltage XLPE power cables we equipped cover specifications from 35mm² to 240mm², accurately matched according to the inverter output capacity, with a total laying length of about 95 kilometers. Its XLPE cross-linked polyethylene insulation layer has excellent insulation performance and strong voltage shock resistance, which can stably transmit power under 15% voltage fluctuation during peak power grid periods, avoiding inverter failures. The maximum rated operating temperature of the conductor reaches 90℃, and the current-carrying capacity is 40% higher than that of ordinary polyvinyl chloride insulated cables, which is suitable for the high-temperature operating environment of the inverter and forms a stable power transmission network. Considering the frequent thunderstorm weather in the Agona region, we equipped 60 kilometers of yellow-green double-color copper core grounding cables with specifications from 6mm² to 50mm². The high-purity copper core has excellent electrical conductivity and low grounding resistance, which can quickly conduct lightning and static electricity into the ground. The yellow-green double-color design is convenient for construction identification, and the excellent corrosion resistance is suitable for the coastal hot and humid environment, laying a solid foundation for the safe operation of the power plant. The inverter control, monitoring system and communication lines of the power plant have high requirements for signal transmission stability. The 4-core and 6-core KVVP shielded control cables we equipped have conductor cross-sections of 0.5mm² to 1.5mm², with a total laying length of about 75 kilometers. Adopting a double shielding method of braided copper shielding + aluminum foil shielding, it can effectively resist electromagnetic interference (EMI). The PVC insulation and sheath materials are suitable for various outdoor and indoor scenarios, and the gray sheath is convenient for distinguishing wiring. The rated voltage of 300/500V and operating temperature of -10℃ ~ 70℃ are perfectly adapted to the local environment, ensuring that the monitoring system can grasp the equipment status in real time and the inverter control signals are accurately transmitted, providing strong support for the efficient operation and maintenance of the power plant.
III. Project Promotion
In the process of project promotion, we have always focused on the needs of the project party, followed up and connected accurately throughout the process, solved various problems in construction and delivery, and ensured the smooth progress of the project. In the early stage of the project, we arranged a professional technical team to go to the Agona project site, optimized the cable selection and routing plan combined with the local terrain, climate, power grid conditions, as well as the project party's construction period and cost needs. In particular, the specification allocation and laying route of the 550-kilometer H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables were calculated and adjusted many times to ensure that both power generation needs are met and construction and material costs are reduced.
In response to the tight project schedule, we launched an emergency production plan, prioritized the allocation of production resources, optimized the production process, and shortened the cable production cycle to 25 days, 30% shorter than the industry average cycle. At the same time, we adopted a batch delivery mode. According to the project construction progress, we first delivered the 550-kilometer H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables needed for the module array, and then gradually delivered the medium-voltage power cables, grounding cables and shielded control cables, avoiding the warehousing pressure and cable damage caused by one-time delivery, and ensuring that the construction progress is not affected. In the transportation link, we selected a professional international logistics team, adopted waterproof and anti-collision packaging methods, tracked the logistics status throughout the process, and ensured that all cables were safely delivered to the Agona project site without any damage or loss, and all cables were delivered on time.
During the construction process, we arranged professional technical personnel to provide remote guidance to local EPC contractors, offered technical support for key links such as cable routing, wiring and grounding, and solved various problems encountered in construction, especially the laying skills of H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables in hilly terrain and the grounding method of the shielding layer of KVVP shielded control cables. This effectively reduced the construction difficulty and avoided potential safety hazards and efficiency losses caused by non-standard installation. At the same time, all cables we provided have passed international authoritative certifications such as TÜV and IEC, which can be put into use without additional testing, successfully passing the review of international financial institutions and providing strong support for the project's financing landing.
IV. Project Achievements and Cooperation Value
At the end of 2025, the Ghana Agona Large-Scale Ground-Mounted PV Power Plant was successfully completed and put into operation. After half a year of actual operation inspection, all cable products we provided performed excellently, perfectly solving various problems faced by the project in the early stage and achieving remarkable project results. The annual power generation of the power plant reached the expected 160 million kWh, effectively alleviating the tight power supply in the Agona region, providing stable power guarantee for local industrial development and residents' lives, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, helping Ghana's energy structure transformation.
From the project party's perspective, our cable products have greatly reduced the later operation and maintenance costs: due to the excellent quality and strong adaptability of the cables, there have been no failures during half a year of operation, and the operation and maintenance costs are more than 40% lower than those of similar power plants using ordinary cables, which effectively shortens the project return cycle and helps the project party achieve the expected investment return goal. The 550-kilometer H1Z2Z2-K PV special cables, with stable transmission performance and excellent environmental adaptability, have become the core guarantee for the efficient power generation of the power plant. Their advantages of UV resistance, corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance have been highly praised by the project party and the local operation and maintenance team.
The value of this cooperation lies not only in providing a high-quality cable solution for the Agona Power Plant, but also in breaking the cognitive barrier of the international market to Chinese cables with our professional services and high-quality products, accumulating valuable experience for China's PV wire exports to the West African market.
