Gambia Banjul International Airport Expansion
GERITEL
Apr 14,2026
Between 2023 and 2024, the Republic of The Gambia launched one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects to date—the comprehensive expansion of Banjul International Airport. As the Gambia's sole international airport and a critical aviation gateway connecting Europe with West Africa, the facility handles over 500,000 passengers annually. However, with steadily increasing traffic volumes and aging existing infrastructure, the airport faced urgent demands for electrical system upgrades.
Led by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure (MOTWI) and the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), this multi-million dollar PPP (Public-Private Partnership) project encompassed a new modern terminal building, apron expansion, runway rehabilitation, cargo area upgrades, and full smart airport system deployment. The objective: transform Banjul International Airport into a West African regional aviation hub fully compliant with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards.
For the EPC contractor, the central challenge was clear: how to ensure safe, reliable power supply across all airport subsystems under tropical maritime climate conditions while meeting stringent international aviation standards. As critical infrastructure, airports demand exceptional performance in fire resistance, electromagnetic immunity, mechanical durability, and long-term operational stability from every cable installed.
Client Pain Points: The Complexity of Multi-System Cable Selection
Through initial consultations with the project's general contractor, we identified several critical pain points:
First, system complexity creating selection dilemmas. Airport projects involve multiple interconnected yet distinct subsystems—building interior power distribution, low-voltage control, communication systems, external high-voltage supply, and fire emergency systems—each with radically different technical specifications. The client needed a single supplier capable of delivering comprehensive solutions, not fragmented procurement from multiple vendors.
Second, stringent standards compliance requirements. As an international airport project, all electrical equipment had to comply with IEC international standards and carry relevant certifications. As a Commonwealth nation, The Gambia follows dual EN/IEC standard systems, placing explicit demands on supplier qualifications.
Third, delivery pressure and logistical challenges. Located on the West African coast with relatively limited logistics infrastructure, any supply delay could disrupt overall construction progress, generating substantial liquidated damages.
Fourth, special adaptation to tropical environments. Banjul's tropical climate—characterized by high temperatures, humidity, and salt spray corrosion—accelerates aging in conventional cables, demanding specially protected products.
Solution: A Full-Spectrum IEC-Certified Cable Product Matrix
Addressing these challenges, Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. leveraged extensive international airport project experience to craft a complete cable supply solution. Rather than simply providing products, we engaged deeply during the design phase, collaborating with electrical engineers to ensure every cable category's technical parameters matched field applications precisely.
Building Interior Power Distribution: Balancing Flexibility and Safety
For terminal interior lighting, socket outlets, and power distribution, we recommended the H07V-K series single-core flexible cables, selecting 1.5mm² and 10mm² specifications to precisely match different load requirements.
H07V-K 1.5mm² was deployed for LED lighting circuits and low-voltage socket supplies, supplied in 5,000-meter reels covering the entire departure hall and passenger waiting area ceiling lighting networks. This specification utilizes H07V-K flexible copper conductor construction, with ultra-fine stranded copper wire design keeping the cable outer diameter within 3.4mm. In ceiling plenums with restricted height, it navigates easily through metal studs and cable tray bends without additional joints. Compared to traditional solid-conductor BV cables, H07V-K flexible copper conductor delivers over 40% improved installation efficiency in confined spaces. Site crews reported achieving 120 meters of wiring per person per day—significantly reducing high-altitude work difficulty and labor costs.
H07V-K 10mm² served jet bridge power distribution and large electromechanical equipment connections, supplied in 1,000-meter reels to meet 32A-50A power demands for boarding gate baggage conveyors, HVAC units, and lift equipment. This specification also employs H07V-K flexible copper conductor construction, but with optimized stranding pitch that maintains flexibility while providing sufficient mechanical strength for direct vertical drops from cable trays to equipment junction boxes without transition sections. Field measurements demonstrated that under jet bridge conditions requiring frequent bending, H07V-K flexible copper conductor achieves over 5,000 bending cycles (per IEC 60227 standard testing), while solid-conductor cables show copper wire fracture risk after merely 200 bends. This difference directly reduces rewiring workload during equipment maintenance, saving clients lifecycle operational costs.

The synergistic configuration of both specifications avoids safety risks from undersized cables carrying excessive current while preventing material waste and installation difficulties from oversized cables in light-load scenarios—demonstrating GERITEL's application-based precise selection capability.
For multi-core control circuits, we supplied the H05VV-F series flexible control cables. These products offer excellent oil resistance and abrasion properties, ideal for airport baggage handling systems, escalators, and electromechanical equipment control loops.
Airport Low-Voltage and Communication Systems: Anti-Interference and Signal Integrity
Modern airport operations depend heavily on precision data transmission and control systems. Accordingly, we provided KVV/KVVP series control cables for low-voltage systems, and RVVP shielded communication cables for air traffic control communications, security screening equipment, and building automation systems. The RVVP's copper wire braided shielding effectively suppresses electromagnetic interference, ensuring signal integrity for critical communication links—essential for airport tower communications and navigation systems.
External High-Voltage Power Supply: Large-Section Power Transmission
Runway lighting, apron power supply, and main substation connections require high-capacity power transmission. We supplied YJV cross-linked polyethylene insulated power cables, ranging from 4×185mm² to 4×300mm², meeting long-distance power distribution needs from high-voltage substations to functional zones. For direct burial sections and areas with high mechanical damage risk, we provided SWA (Steel Wire Armored) series cables, also covering 4×185mm² to 4×300mm² specifications. Their double-layer steel tape armoring withstands direct external impact, ensuring long-term stable operation of supply lines in harsh environments.
Fire Emergency Systems: Core Safety for Life Protection
Airport fire protection systems represent the project's most critical subsystem. We specifically supplied specialty cables meeting dual fire-resistant + LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) standards:
2×1.5mm² and 2×2.5mm² for Fire Alarm System (FAS) applications
3×2.5mm² and 4×6mm² for firefighting power equipment supply, including smoke exhaust fans, fire pumps, and emergency lighting
These cables maintain circuit integrity for over 90 minutes at 750°C flame conditions, with zero halogen release and minimal smoke density during combustion—fully meeting international airport standards for personnel evacuation safety.
