Phosphate mining has been the lifeblood of Christmas Island’s economy for over 120 years, supporting more than half of the island’s workforce and contributing nearly 50% of its gross regional product. In recent years, a large-scale phosphate processing plant renovation and expansion project was launched on the island to upgrade production efficiency and meet the growing demand for phosphate exports to markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia. As a professional wire and cable exporter, Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. was honored to participate in this project, providing high-quality, SAA-certified cables that solved critical pain points for the client and ensured the smooth operation of the processing plant.
This case will detail how we tailored solutions using Mining Cables, Elastomer Cable, andFire Rated Cable, leveraged our project experience and certifications to overcome challenges, and delivered exceptional value to our client in Christmas Island’s mining industry.
1. Challenges Faced by Christmas Island’s Phosphate Processing Plant
The project is located in Christmas Island, an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, focusing on the renovation and expansion of an existing phosphate processing plant. The plant is a key part of the island’s economy, responsible for crushing, sorting, and processing raw phosphate ore before export. However, the client faced several critical challenges that threatened the project’s progress and long-term operational safety, which led them to seek a reliable cable supplier with professional capabilities and relevant certifications.
First, the harsh operating environment of the phosphate processing plant posed strict requirements for cables. The plant is exposed to high humidity, corrosive phosphate dust, and frequent mechanical friction from heavy equipment like crushers and conveyors. The client’s previous cables had short service lives, often suffering from insulation damage, corrosion, and even short circuits, leading to unplanned downtime and increased maintenance costs. Second, as the project is located in Australia, all electrical products must comply with local standards and hold SAA certification—a mandatory requirement for market access in the region. Many potential suppliers failed to meet this key requirement, making it difficult for the client to find a qualified partner. Third, the client needed cables that could adapt to different scenarios within the plant: from underground mining areas to high-temperature processing workshops, and from mobile equipment connections to fixed power transmission lines. They required a one-stop solution rather than purchasing different cables from multiple suppliers, which would complicate procurement and after-sales service.
After researching multiple suppliers, the client chose Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd. because of our SAA certification, rich experience in mining and industrial projects, and ability to provide customized cable solutions. Our track record of delivering reliable cables for similar mining projects gave the client confidence that we could solve their unique challenges.
2. Matching Cables to Project Needs
After in-depth communication with the client and on-site investigation (conducted remotely due to geographical constraints), we identified the specific needs of each area in the phosphate processing plant and designed a tailored solution using three core cable types: Mining Cables, Elastomer Cable, and Fire Rated Cable. Each cable type was selected for its unique advantages, addressing the client’s pain points more effectively than alternative products.
2.1 Mining Cables: The Core of Underground and Heavy Equipment Power Supply
As a core mining product of Dongguan GERITEL Electrical Co., Ltd., mining cable is the lifeline of the phosphate processing plant, specially providing stable and safe power support for underground mining equipment, conveyors, and crushers. Combined with the harsh working conditions of the Christmas Island phosphate processing plant (high humidity, corrosive dust, and heavy equipment friction) and closely following the requirements of local Australian standards, we accurately adjusted the order plan for the client, selecting two core Australian standard mining cables—AS/NZS 1802:2003 Reeling & Trailing Cables and AS/NZS 1972:2006 cables, and matching specifications according to the two core scenarios of underground mobile and fixed transmission, forming an exclusive order plan that completely meets the project’s pain point needs:
Combined with the two core scenarios of the project—underground mining mobile equipment and ground & underground fixed power transmission, we formulated differentiated order specifications and usage allocation for the two Australian standard mining cables. Each product is optimally designed for specific working conditions, highlighting standard advantages while avoiding the performance shortcomings of ordinary mining cables:
- AS/NZS 1802:2003 Reeling & Trailing Cables (Order Specifications: 3×25mm², 3×35mm², 3×50mm²): Specifically suitable for mobile mining equipment such as electric scrapers and rock drills in underground mining areas, it fully meets the strict requirements of this standard for underground mining reeling and trailing cables, and is also the core order product for underground mobile equipment in this project. This cable adopts flexible multi-strand tinned annealed copper conductors, matched with EPR insulation layer and heavy-duty PCP sheath. After strict formula optimization and process control, it has corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, and mechanical wear resistance far exceeding industry standards, which can effectively resist phosphate dust erosion and equipment drag friction. At the same time, it has a built-in semi-conductive shielding layer to reduce electromagnetic interference and the risk of electric sparks, meeting the flammable environment requirements of underground mining. Compared with ordinary mobile mining cables, it has more outstanding tensile performance, with an additional textile reinforcement inside, which can bear the strong tensile force during equipment dragging and avoid cable breakage, completely solving the client’s previous pain point of frequent damage and replacement of mobile equipment cables. The order quantity accounts for 60% of the total mining cable usage, mainly used for power supply of underground mining equipment.
- AS/NZS 1972:2006 cables (Order Specifications: 3×70mm², 3×95mm², 3×120mm²): Used for fixed power transmission lines in underground mining areas and ground processing workshops, it meets the requirements of this standard for mining fixed wiring cables. The order quantity accounts for 40% of the total mining cable usage. This cable adopts high-purity copper conductors (complying with AS/NZS 60228 standard), matched with XLPE insulation layer and steel tape armor layer, with outstanding compression and impact resistance, which can effectively prevent cable damage caused by heavy equipment rolling and falling debris impact. At the same time, it has excellent corrosion resistance and waterproof performance, suitable for the high-humidity and corrosive underground environment. It is used for fixed power supply main lines to ensure stable power transmission of the entire processing plant. Compared with ordinary fixed mining cables, it has stronger insulation stability and longer service life.
The client finally recognized our adjusted mining cable order plan and chose our company’s AS/NZS 1802:2003 Reeling & Trailing Cables and AS/NZS 1972:2006 cables instead of products from other competitors. There are three core reasons: first, both products comply with local Australian standards and have passed SAA certification, which can smoothly pass market access, fully meet the project’s compliance requirements, and avoid legal and regulatory risks; second, our order plan accurately matches the two core scenarios of underground mobile and fixed transmission, and the two mining cables perform their respective duties, specifically solving the power supply pain points of different equipment. Compared with the "one-size-fits-all" order model of competitors, it is more professional and adaptable; third, we detailedly showed the client the production process, Australian standard test reports, and past order cases of similar projects of the two mining cables, clearly proving that the two Australian standard mining cables have been verified in the field for a long time, with an average service life of 8-10 years, far longer than the 3-5 years of ordinary mining cables. They have passed strict impact, bending, insulation and other tests, which can greatly reduce the frequency of cable replacement and maintenance costs, reduce unplanned downtime, and ensure the continuity of factory production. At the same time, we provide flexible order customization services, which can adjust the length and specifications according to on-site wiring needs, further improving the client’s cooperation experience.
2.2 Elastomer Cable: Flexible and Durable for Mobile Equipment
For the plant’s mobile equipment, such as mobile crushers and temporary conveyors, we recommended Elastomer Cable (specifically the HO7RN-F Elastomer Cable), with sizes ranging from 2×1.5mm² to 3×25mm². This cable type was selected because of its exceptional flexibility and durability, addressing the client’s pain point of frequent cable damage due to equipment movement.
Compared to traditional rubber cables, Elastomer Cable uses a special elastomer insulation and sheath material that is more flexible, with a bending radius as low as 6 times the cable diameter—allowing it to adapt to the frequent bending and twisting of mobile equipment without cracking or breaking. It also has excellent resistance to oil, water, and corrosion, making it suitable for the plant’s humid and dusty environment. Ordinary rubber cables often become brittle after prolonged exposure to these conditions, leading to insulation failure and short circuits. Additionally, our Elastomer Cable is SAA-certified and meets AS/NZS 5000 standards, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

The client valued the flexibility and durability of our Elastomer Cable, as it eliminated the need for frequent cable replacements and reduced the risk of equipment downtime caused by cable failures. This not only saved costs but also improved the overall efficiency of the plant’s operations.
2.3 Fire Rated Cable: Ensuring Safety in High-Risk Areas
The phosphate processing plant’s control room, electrical distribution cabinet area, and processing workshops are high-risk areas where fires could occur due to electrical faults or flammable materials. To ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, we recommended Fire Rated Cable (specifically theBBTRZ Flexible Fire Rated Cable), with sizes ranging from 4×2.5mm² to 7×10mm². This cable type is designed to maintain power supply for 180 minutes in the event of a fire, allowing emergency equipment (such as fire pumps and emergency lighting) to operate and ensuring safe evacuation.
Unlike ordinary fire-resistant cables, our Fire Rated Cable uses a ceramicized mica tape insulation layer, which can withstand high temperatures of up to 950℃ without melting or losing insulation performance. It is also low-smoke and halogen-free, meaning it does not produce toxic or corrosive gases when burned—protecting personnel and equipment from secondary damage. Ordinary fire-resistant cables often fail to maintain power supply for more than 30 minutes, leaving the plant vulnerable in the event of a fire. Our Fire Rated Cable is SAA-certified, meeting the strict fire safety standards required for industrial plants in Australia.
3. SAA Certification and Strict Quality Control
Safety is the top priority in the mining and processing industry, and our ability to provide SAA-certified cables was a key factor in winning the client’s trust. SAA (Standards Australia Approvals) is the mandatory certification for electrical products in Australia, ensuring that products meet strict safety, quality, and performance standards outlined in AS/NZS 5000 series standards. All cables we supplied for this project are SAA-certified, with test reports confirming their compliance with flame retardancy, insulation integrity, and low-smoke requirements.

In addition to certification, we implemented strict quality control throughout the production process to ensure the reliability of our cables. We use high-purity copper conductors and high-quality insulation materials, and each batch of cables undergoes rigorous testing—including insulation resistance testing, voltage withstand testing, and flame retardancy testing—before leaving the factory. We also provided the client with detailed test reports and technical documents, ensuring full transparency and compliance with local regulations.
Our rich experience in similar mining projects also contributed to the safety of the project. We have previously supplied cables for mineral processing plants in Australia and other regions, and our team is familiar with the unique challenges of the mining industry. We provided on-site technical guidance to the client’s installation team, ensuring that the cables were installed correctly and safely, further reducing the risk of electrical faults.
