In the first quarter of 2025, our team successfully completed a key electric wire export project for the Vicuña mining site located in San Juan Province, Argentina. This large-scale open-pit mining project, focused on metal ore extraction, required high-performance, durable electric wires to support its daily operations—from powering heavy mining equipment to ensuring stable electricity supply for on-site facilities. As a professional electric wire manufacturer with years of experience in overseas mining projects, we stepped in to solve the client’s urgent challenges, delivering high-quality XHHW and MC Cable products that met international standards and the project’s harsh environmental demands. This case study details how we addressed the client’s pain points, leveraged our core advantages, and delivered a successful solution that earned long-term trust.
1. The Challenges of Power Supply in Argentina’s Mining Industry
The Vicuña mining project in San Juan Province is one of the most important metal mining projects in western Argentina, covering a large area with complex terrain and harsh working conditions. The client, a local mining enterprise with extensive experience in ore extraction, was facing critical challenges in its electrical system construction when we established cooperation. Their original plan to use local electric wires had to be abandoned due to three core pain points that threatened the project’s progress and safety.
First, the local electric wires lacked necessary international certifications, including UL certification, which is essential for ensuring electrical safety in industrial and mining environments. The client’s mining operations involve high-voltage equipment and flammable materials, so uncertified wires posed significant safety risks, including short circuits and fire hazards that could lead to costly downtime. Second, the local products could not withstand the extreme weather conditions of San Juan Province—hot summers with temperatures exceeding 35°C and cold winters dropping to -10°C, which caused ordinary wires to become brittle, crack, or lose insulation performance. Third, the client needed wires of multiple sizes to match different equipment and power demands, but local suppliers could only provide limited specifications, leading to delays in the project’s electrical installation phase.
After researching potential suppliers globally, the client chose our company for three key reasons: our complete UL certification coverage for mining-grade electric wires, our proven track record in delivering similar mining projects in South America, and our ability to provide customized size solutions to meet their diverse needs. The client’s core demand was clear: reliable, certified, and durable electric wires that could withstand harsh mining conditions, ensure uninterrupted power supply, and comply with both international standards and local mining regulations (including compliance with CEI EN 50628 for mining electrical installations).
2. XHHW, MC Cable and XHHW-2 multi size electric wire for Mining Demands
After in-depth communication with the client and on-site investigation (conducted remotely due to geographical distance), we designed a customized solution centered on XHHW and MC Cable products, with XHHW-2 multi size electric wire as the core to address their size diversity needs. We carefully selected specific specifications based on the project’s power distribution requirements, equipment types, and installation environments, ensuring each product was tailored to the Vicuña mining site’s unique conditions.
The XHHW-2 multi size electric wire was chosen as the primary wire for the project’s fixed power distribution system, with sizes ranging from 12 AWG to 4/0 AWG to cover different power loads—from small lighting circuits to high-voltage equipment power supply. Unlike ordinary PVC-insulated wires, XHHW-2 features XLPE insulation, which offers excellent high-temperature resistance (operating temperature up to 90°C in wet and dry conditions) and low-temperature flexibility (withstanding -40°C cold bending and impact), making it ideal for San Juan’s extreme weather. Additionally, XHHW-2 is waterproof and sunlight-resistant, preventing moisture and UV damage in the open-pit mining environment—a key advantage over local wires that degraded quickly under direct sunlight and occasional rain.

For the project’s mobile mining equipment (such as excavators and conveyor belts), we recommendedMC Cable (Metal-Clad Cable) in sizes 6 AWG to 2/0 AWG. MC Cable is equipped with an aluminum interlocked armor layer, which provides superior mechanical protection against abrasion, impact, and crushing from rocks and heavy machinery—common risks in mining sites. Unlike unarmored wires, MC Cable can be installed directly without additional conduit, reducing installation time and costs for the client. The MC Cable we provided also features XHHW-2 insulation cores, ensuring consistent performance with the fixed power system and simplifying maintenance.
To further meet the client’s needs, we also supplied complementary products, including XHHW-2 600V single-conductor wires (14 AWG for control circuits) andMC Cable with ground conductors, ensuring full compliance with the project’s electrical safety requirements. All products were manufactured to meet UL 44, UL 1569, and CSA C22.2 standards, as well as local Argentine mining electrical regulations, addressing the client’s core concern of certification compliance.
3. UL Certification and Strict Quality Control
Safety is the top priority in mining operations, and our products’ certification and quality control were key to winning the client’s trust. All XHHW and MC Cable products supplied for the Vicuña project hold full UL certification, including UL 44 for insulated wires and UL 1569 for metal-clad cables—certifications that local suppliers could not provide. This UL certification ensures that our wires meet strict safety standards for electrical performance, fire resistance, and durability, reducing the risk of electrical accidents and ensuring compliance with international mining safety norms (including alignment with IEC 60079-14 for explosive atmosphere safety in mining).
Beyond certification, we implemented a strict quality control process throughout production to ensure consistency and reliability. Each batch of wires underwent rigorous testing, including insulation resistance testing, voltage withstand testing (up to 4.0 kV for 4/0 AWG XHHW-2), and mechanical strength testing (abrasion and impact resistance for MC Cable). We also conducted temperature resistance tests to verify that the XHHW-2 wires could withstand San Juan’s extreme temperatures without performance degradation. Before shipment, our quality inspection team checked each package to ensure no damage or defects, and provided detailed test reports to the client for verification.
We also shared our experience in similar mining projects, including previous projects in Chile and Peru, to demonstrate our ability to deliver safe, reliable solutions in harsh South American mining environments. This track record gave the client additional confidence in our products and services, knowing we understood the unique challenges of mining operations in the region.
4. On-Time, Efficient, and Transparent
The client required the wires to be delivered within 45 days of the order confirmation to avoid delaying the mining project’s construction schedule—a tight timeline that tested our production and logistics capabilities. We prioritized the Vicuña project in our production plan, allocating dedicated production lines to ensure efficient manufacturing of the XHHW-2 multi size electric wire, XHHW, and MC Cable products.
To ensure on-time delivery, we partnered with a reliable international logistics company with extensive experience in exporting electrical products to Argentina. We handled all customs clearance documents, including certification documents, product test reports, and export declarations, to avoid delays at Argentine customs. We also provided real-time logistics tracking to the client, updating them on the shipment’s status every 3 days, so they could plan their installation schedule accordingly.
Upon arrival at the Vicuña mining site, our technical team provided remote guidance to the client’s installation team, offering advice on proper installation methods for MC Cable (including direct burial and aerial installation) and XHHW-2 wires (conduit and open wiring), ensuring compliance with mining electrical installation standards (such as those outlined in GB50070-2020 for mining power supply). We also addressed any installation questions promptly, helping the client complete the electrical system installation on schedule.
5. Stable Performance and Long-Term Value
