3/C PVC Jacketed MC Cable: Common Specs for Power Distribution Projects

When you see “8 AWG 3/C PVC jacketed MC cable” in a quotation, the exact wording matters. Some specs stop at insulation, some add armor, and some include a full ground. Each extra component changes what the cable can do on your jobsite.
This article explains three common 8 AWG specifications, how they differ in real performance, and when to move up to larger sizes for power distribution projects.
1. XHHW-2 Insulation – The Foundation
Start with: 8 AWG 3/C XHHW-2 PVC jacketed MC cable.
The key here is XHHW-2 insulation (cross-linked polyethylene). It offers:
- 90°C wet/dry rating – works indoors, outdoors, in rain or heat.
- Moisture & chemical resistance – ideal for industrial environments.
- No lubrication needed for pulling – saves installation time.
For general power distribution in dry or damp locations, cable trays, and raceways, this baseline version does the job.
2. Add Aluminum Interlocked Armor (AIA) – Mechanical Protection
Next: 8 AWG 3/C Type MC XHHW-2 AIA PVC 600V.
Adding aluminum interlocked armor brings:
- Impact & crush resistance – protects conductors from physical damage.
- No conduit required (per NEC) – armor replaces conduit, saving labor and material.
- Lightweight – AIA is 60–90% lighter than steel armor, easier to handle overhead.
- Flexible bending – works in tight electrical rooms and cable trays.
This version is suitable for exposed runs in industrial plants, commercial buildings, and areas where damage is possible – all without conduit.

3. Add a Full-Size Bare Copper Ground – Safety & Code
Finally: 8 AWG 3/C XHHW-2 MC cable with ground PVC jacket.
A dedicated full-size bare copper grounding conductor (same AWG as phase conductors) adds:
- Reliable fault current path – safer than relying on armor alone.
- No separate ground wire to pull – simpler installation.
- Code compliance – NEC requires an EGC inside MC cable for most applications.
Best for feeders to sensitive equipment (control panels, medical devices, data centers), long runs, or projects with strict inspection.
All the above configurations are available with UL 1569 certification – the standard for metal-clad cables (600V, 90°C, armor impact resistance). Our UL Listed cables help you meet local code requirements and pass inspections without surprises.
4. When to Move from 8 AWG to Larger Sizes
The three structural levels above (XHHW-2, AIA, full ground) are identical across AWG sizes. Only conductor size changes – and that determines ampacity and voltage drop.
| AWG (Copper) | Typical Ampacity (90°C) | When to Use |
| 8 AWG | 55–65A | Small feeders, loads ≤50A, runs <150ft |
| 6 AWG | 75–85A | Loads 50–70A, or long runs needing lower voltage drop |
| 4 AWG | 95–105A | Main feeder for small industrial building, loads 80–100A |
| 2 AWG | 130–145A | Feeder from transformer to main switchboard |
| 1/0 AWG | 170–190A | Heavy industrial feeders, long distance |
Rule: Size by continuous load (ampacity ≥125% of load), then check voltage drop. If drop >3%, go one size larger. Structure stays the same – only copper gets thicker.

FAQ
Q1: XHHW-2 or THHN/THWN-2 inside MC cable?
XHHW-2 has better moisture, chemical, and cold resistance. For wet or harsh environments, choose XHHW-2. For standard dry indoor runs, THHN/THWN-2 is often sufficient.
Q2: Is a PVC jacket always required over the armor?
No. PVC jacket adds moisture/UV protection. For outdoor or exposed damp locations, jacket is strongly recommended.
Q3: Can PVC jacketed MC cable be installed outdoors?
Yes – if jacket is marked “sunlight resistant” and UL 1569 listed. Verify datasheet for UV rating. Direct burial may require extra ratings.

Need the right spec for your project?
Not every job needs the full configuration (XHHW-2 + AIA + full ground + PVC jacket). But if you’re unsure, that combination gives you maximum protection and flexibility. Tell us your load, distance, and installation environment – we will recommend the correct AWG and structure without over‑selling.
