Apr 02,2026
In 2024, Venezuela launched a key infrastructure upgrade project at the Port of La Guaira (La Guaira), the country’s most important coastal port and a critical hub for maritime trade in the Caribbean region. The project aimed to address the port’s long-standing operational inefficiencies, outdated electrical systems, and low capacity—issues that had limited its ability to handle growing cargo volumes and meet international shipping standards. As a professional wire exporter with years of experience in large-scale infrastructure projects, we were selected to provide high-quality electrical wire solutions for this landmark upgrade, focusing on three core products: THHN, MV-90 Cable, and PLTC / ITC Cable. Our UL-certified products, proven project experience, and cost-effective solutions directly solved the client’s most pressing pain points, ensuring the port’s electrical system upgrade was completed on time, safely, and efficiently.
1. The Urgent Need for Reliable Electrical Solutions in La Guaira Port
The Port of La Guaira, located in the state of Vargas, Venezuela, serves as the primary gateway for the country’s imports and exports, handling over 60% of Venezuela’s maritime cargo. By 2023, the port’s electrical infrastructure had become obsolete after decades of use—many of the existing wires and cables were uncertified, prone to overheating, and unable to withstand the harsh coastal environment (high humidity, salt spray, and fluctuating temperatures). The upgrade project, led by the Venezuelan Port Authority, focused on modernizing container terminals, loading/unloading equipment, and the port’s power distribution system to increase capacity from 10% of its installed 1.2 million TEU/year to 40% by the end of 2024.
The client’s core pain points were clear and urgent. First, they needed wires and cables that could comply with international safety standards, as uncertified products had previously caused frequent power outages and equipment failures, disrupting port operations. Second, the coastal environment required products with strong corrosion resistance and temperature adaptability—ordinary wires would degrade quickly under salt spray and high humidity. Third, the project had a tight timeline (8 months from planning to completion) and a limited budget, so the client needed cost-effective solutions without compromising quality. Finally, they sought a supplier with proven experience in port upgrade projects, as the electrical system’s reliability would directly impact the port’s operational efficiency and safety.
After evaluating several international suppliers, the client chose us for three key reasons: our full UL certification (critical for meeting international safety standards), our track record of completing similar port and infrastructure projects in Latin America, and our ability to provide high-quality products at a competitive price point—addressing all their core concerns in one comprehensive solution.
2. Matching THHN, MV-90 Cable, and PLTC / ITC Cable to Project Needs
To solve the client’s pain points, we conducted a detailed on-site assessment of the port’s electrical needs, collaborating closely with the project’s engineering team to design a customized solution using our three core products. Each product was selected for its unique advantages, tailored to specific parts of the port’s electrical system, and chosen over alternative options for clear performance and cost benefits.
The first product we recommended was THHN copper wire, available in sizes 12 AWG to 4/0 AWG, with a rated voltage of 600V and a working temperature range of -40°C to 90°C. This wire was used for the port’s low-voltage power distribution systems, including connections for container terminal lights, small motors, and control panels. The key advantage of THHN is its high heat resistance and durability—critical for the port’s warm, humid environment. Unlike ordinary PVC wires, which tend to crack and degrade under high temperatures and moisture,THHN features a thermoplastic nylon jacket that provides excellent resistance to abrasion, oil, and moisture, ensuring long-term reliability. A key feature that set our THHN apart is its THHN copper wire high temp rating, which allows it to operate continuously at 90°C without losing insulation performance, making it ideal for areas near heavy machinery that generate significant heat. This high-temperature rating eliminated the risk of overheating and short circuits, which had been a major cause of power outages in the port’s old system.

For the port’s medium-voltage power transmission (5kV to 35kV), we supplied MV-90 Cable in sizes 250 kcmil to 1000 kcmil, designed in accordance with UL 1072 standards. MV-90 Cable is a shielded medium-voltage cable with a maximum operating temperature of 90°C, featuring a stranded copper conductor, XLPE insulation, a metallic copper shield, and a UV-resistant PVC jacket. We recommended this cable over MV-105 (a higher-temperature alternative) because the port’s medium-voltage systems did not require the 105°C rating of MV-105, and MV-90 Cable offered superior cost-effectiveness while still meeting all safety and performance requirements. The XLPE insulation provides low dielectric loss and excellent resistance to moisture and corrosion, making it perfect for the port’s coastal setting, while the metallic shield prevents electromagnetic interference—critical for the port’s sensitive control systems. This cable was used to connect the port’s main power supply to container cranes, conveyor belts, and other heavy-duty equipment, ensuring stable power transmission even during peak operational hours.
Finally, we provided PLTC / ITC Cable (Power Limited Tray Cable / Instrument Tray Cable) in 2-conductor and 4-conductor configurations, sized 18 AWG to 12 AWG, for the port’s automation and control systems. PLTC / ITC Cable is UL-listed (complying with UL 2250 and UL 13) and designed for use in harsh industrial environments, eliminating the need for conduit when installed in accordance with NEC Article 727 and 725. Unlike standard control cables, PLTC / ITC Cable features individual shields over each conductor pair, preventing crosstalk and interference from nearby power cables—essential for the port’s automated container tracking and equipment control systems. Its rugged jacket also provides protection against mechanical damage, moisture, and salt spray, ensuring reliable signal transmission in the port’s demanding environment. This cable was installed in the port’s control rooms, connecting sensors, actuators, and monitoring devices to ensure seamless communication between different parts of the port’s operations.
3. UL Certification and Rigorous Quality Control
Safety was the top priority for the La Guaira Port upgrade project, as electrical failures in a busy port can lead to costly downtime, equipment damage, and even safety hazards. Our biggest advantage in this regard was our full UL certification—all three products (THHN, MV-90 Cable, and PLTC / ITC Cable) are UL-listed, complying with the strict safety standards set by Underwriters Laboratories, as well as NEC (National Electrical Code) and ASTM requirements. This certification was critical for the client, as it ensured the products met international safety standards and would pass the project’s strict inspection process.
In addition to UL certification, we implemented rigorous quality control measures throughout the production process to ensure consistency and reliability. Each batch of wires and cables was tested for electrical performance, insulation resistance, temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance before shipment. For example, our THHN wires were tested to ensure they could withstand the 90°C operating temperature without insulation breakdown, while our MV-90 Cable was tested for dielectric strength and shield effectiveness. We also provided detailed test reports for each product, giving the client full transparency and confidence in the quality of our solutions. Our quality control process aligned with ISO 9001 standards, further reinforcing our commitment to delivering reliable, safe products.
4. On-Time, On-Budget, and Seamless Collaboration
The client’s tight 8-month timeline was a major challenge, but our experience in international export and large-scale projects allowed us to deliver on time and within budget. We started by finalizing the product specifications and quantities with the client in January 2024, then began production immediately to avoid delays. Our production team prioritized the La Guaira project, ensuring that all products were manufactured, tested, and packaged within 6 weeks.
For shipping, we arranged for sea freight from our factory in Dongguan, China, to the Port of La Guaira, coordinating closely with the client to handle all customs clearance and documentation. We provided detailed shipping updates throughout the process, ensuring the client was informed of the cargo’s location at all times. The shipment arrived in March 2024, exactly as scheduled, allowing the client to begin installation without delay.
We also provided on-site technical support during the installation phase, sending two experienced engineers to La Guaira to assist the client’s team with product installation and troubleshooting. This support was crucial, as it ensured the wires and cables were installed correctly, maximizing their performance and lifespan. Our engineers also trained the client’s maintenance team on how to inspect and maintain the products, helping to prevent future issues and extend the life of the electrical system. This level of support was a key differentiator for us, as many other suppliers do not offer on-site assistance—something the client greatly appreciated.
5. A Modern, Reliable Electrical System for La Guaira Port
By the end of August 2024, the La Guaira Port upgrade project was completed, and our wires and cables played a critical role in its success. The port’s electrical system now operates with zero unplanned power outages, a significant improvement from the frequent failures experienced before the upgrade. The THHN wires have maintained their performance in the port’s warm, humid environment, with no signs of degradation or overheating, thanks to their THHN copper wire high temp rating and durable jacket. The MV-90 Cable has ensured stable medium-voltage power transmission, supporting the port’s heavy-duty equipment and allowing for increased operational capacity. The PLTC / ITC Cable has enabled seamless communication between the port’s automation systems, improving efficiency and reducing human error.
The project’s success has had a tangible impact on the Port of La Guaira’s operations: cargo handling capacity has increased by 30%, reducing shipping delays and improving the port’s competitiveness in the Caribbean region. The reliable electrical system has also reduced maintenance costs, as the client no longer needs to replace faulty wires and cables regularly. Additionally, the port’s safety record has improved significantly, with no electrical-related accidents since the upgrade was completed.
