In 2022, our company successfully provided wire supply solutions for the expansion project of Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, Costa Rica. As the busiest international airport in Costa Rica, Juan Santamaría International Airport launched a large-scale expansion project that year to improve its passenger throughput and operational efficiency, involving the construction of new terminal buildings, apron expansion, and the upgrading of supporting electrical systems. As a professional wire exporter, we stood out from many competitors with our high-quality products, sufficient inventory, fast delivery, and competitive prices, successfully solving the urgent needs of the project party and becoming a reliable cooperative partner for the airport expansion project.
1. Urgent Demand for Wires in Airport Expansion
The 2022 expansion project of Juan Santamaría International Airport is a key infrastructure project in Costa Rica, aiming to upgrade the airport’s hardware facilities and enhance its status as a regional aviation hub. The project involves a wide range of electrical system upgrades, including power supply for new terminal lighting, air conditioning, and communication equipment, as well as power transmission for apron ground service equipment. The project party faced multiple pain points in the wire procurement process, which directly affected the progress of the entire expansion project.
First, the project had a tight construction period. The airport required the expansion project to be completed within the scheduled time to avoid affecting normal flight operations, so the wire delivery cycle was required to be extremely short, and any delay would lead to the suspension of the electrical construction link. Second, the project had high requirements for wire quality and specifications. As a key infrastructure, the airport’s electrical system needs to ensure long-term stable operation, withstand harsh environments such as high temperature, humidity, and ultraviolet radiation, and must comply with local electrical safety standards. Third, the project required a large variety and quantity of wires, and the project party hoped to purchase all required wires from a single supplier to reduce communication costs and ensure product consistency. Finally, the project had strict budget control requirements, and the wire procurement needed to be cost-effective without compromising quality.
After many comparisons and inspections, the project party finally chose our company as the exclusive wire supplier for the project, mainly because of our rich export experience to Central America, sufficient inventory reserves, fast delivery capacity, and complete product certification that meets Costa Rican standards.
2. High-Quality Wires Aligned with Project Requirements
After in-depth communication with the project party, we fully understood the specific needs of the airport expansion project for wires, and customized a complete wire supply solution, focusing on three core wire types: XHHW-2, Type TC-ER Power Cable, and MC Cable, with detailed specifications tailored to the project’s actual application scenarios.
The XHHW-2 wire we provided is a high-performance cross-linked polyethylene insulated wire, which is widely used in the airport’s utility systems—this is the XHHW-2 cable for utility systems that perfectly meets the power transmission needs of the airport’s public facilities. We provided XHHW-2 wires in multiple specifications, including 12 AWG, 10 AWG, 8 AWG, and 6 AWG, with a rated voltage of 600V, which is suitable for both dry and wet environments, and can withstand a high temperature of 90°C. Compared with ordinary PVC insulated wires, XHHW-2 has better corrosion resistance, aging resistance, and flame retardancy, and its XLPE insulation layer can effectively reduce energy loss, ensuring stable power supply for the airport’s long-term operation. The project party chose XHHW-2 because it can adapt to the airport’s complex outdoor and indoor environments, and its long service life can reduce later maintenance costs.

For the power transmission of the airport’s main electrical lines, we provided Type TC-ER Power Cable, which is a tray cable with excellent performance, available in 4/0 AWG, 2/0 AWG, and 1 AWG specifications, with a rated voltage of 600V. Compared withMC Cable, Type TC-ER Power Cable has the advantage of being more flexible and easier to install, without the need for external armoring but still having strong impact and crush resistance, which is very suitable for the airport’s narrow construction space and complex wiring environment. It also meets UL 1227 standards, is suitable for Class I, Div 2 and Zone 2 environments, and can be used in both cable trays and direct burial scenarios, greatly improving construction efficiency. The project party finally chose Type TC-ER Power Cable for the main power lines, considering its installation convenience and cost-effectiveness while ensuring safety.
In addition, we provided MC Cable (Metal-Clad Cable) in 12 AWG to 4 AWG specifications for the airport’s electrical equipment connection. MC Cable is enclosed in an interlocking metal tape armor, which has strong anti-interference and mechanical protection performance, and is suitable for areas with high safety requirements, such as the airport’s control room and equipment room. Its integrated design of conductors and armor can effectively prevent external damage and ensure the safety of electrical equipment operation. Compared with other armored cables, our MC Cable has a smaller bend radius, which is more convenient for wiring in narrow spaces, and its flame retardant performance meets IEEE 1202 standards, further improving the safety of the airport’s electrical system.
3. Complete Certifications and Strict Quality Control
As a key infrastructure involving public safety, the airport expansion project has extremely strict requirements for wire safety. Our company has always regarded product quality and safety as the core, and has a complete set of quality control systems and international certifications to ensure that all wires supplied meet the standards of Costa Rica and the project.
All our wires have passed the CNE certification (Comisión Nacional de Energía), which is a mandatory certification for electrical products in Costa Rica and a necessary condition for legal entry into the Costa Rican market. In addition, XHHW-2, Type TC-ER Power Cable, and MC Cable have all obtained UL certification (including UL 44, UL 1277), ABS certification, and comply with IEEE 1202 flame retardant standards and ASTM D 7646-07 low-temperature resistance standards, ensuring that the products can adapt to Costa Rica’s climate environment and meet the airport’s high safety requirements. The Type TC-ER Power Cable also has marine shipboard cable certification, which further verifies its reliability in harsh environments.
Before delivery, we conducted strict quality inspections on each batch of wires, including electrical performance testing, mechanical performance testing, flame retardant testing, and low-temperature resistance testing, to ensure that there are no quality problems. We also provided complete technical documents and certification reports for the project party, including product specifications, test reports, and certification certificates, to ensure that the project’s electrical construction meets local regulatory requirements and passes the final acceptance smoothly.
4. Fast Response to Solve Urgent Needs
The tight construction period was the biggest pain point for the project party, and our company’s fast delivery capacity became the key to winning the cooperation. After signing the cooperation agreement, we immediately activated the emergency supply mechanism, relying on our large inventory reserves to quickly allocate the required wires.
We have long-term inventory reserves of XHHW-2, Type TC-ER Power Cable, and MC Cable in various specifications, which can avoid the long production cycle caused by custom production. After receiving the order, we completed the inventory allocation, packaging, and inspection within 15 working days, and arranged for professional international logistics to transport the wires to Juan Santamaría International Airport. We delivered the goods quickly with a short delivery cycle, which was 50% shorter than the project party’s expected delivery time, effectively ensuring that the airport’s electrical construction was carried out as scheduled, without causing any delay to the overall expansion project.
During the delivery process, we assigned a dedicated project manager to track the logistics progress in real time, feed back the transportation status to the project party every day, and solve any possible logistics problems in a timely manner. After the wires arrived at the project site, we sent professional technical personnel to guide the project party in wire installation and use, answering technical questions and ensuring that the wires are used correctly, which was highly recognized by the project party.
