Project Background: Critical Pain Points in Clean Energy Transition
Puerto Rico has been accelerating power generation clean transformation since 2024, phasing out aging diesel-fired power units and deploying LNG combined-cycle plants and grid-connected renewable generation. The local EPC client faced severe wiring challenges that threatened project compliance and timeline.
Coastal salt spray, high humidity, and frequent hurricane risks caused rapid cable degradation. Many suppliers lacked valid UL certifications, leading to inspection failures and rework risks. The client also struggled with inconsistent product quality, slow logistics, and limited technical support for harsh island environments. They needed a partner with proven experience in Caribbean energy projects, full UL certification, and rugged cables built for long-term reliability.

Customized Cabling Solution for Generation Retrofit
Based on on-site engineering analysis and local code requirements, we designed a full set of power and distribution cables tailored for generation retrofit, main transmission, and outdoor power loops. Our solution centered on USE-2, XHHW-2 cable for electrical systems, and medium-voltage power cables, with clear performance advantages over standard alternatives—each carefully selected to address Puerto Rico’s unique coastal climate, heavy operational loads, and strict NEC compliance demands.
USE-2
Sizes: 4/0 AWG, 2/0 AWG, 250 kcmil (copper conductor, XLPE insulation, stranded construction for flexibility) Application: Outdoor overhead lines, direct-buried feeders between generation units and step-up stations, and coastal outdoor power corridors Advantage: UL 44 listed, sunlight-resistant, salt-moisture-proof, and rated 90°C in both wet and dry conditions. Unlike ordinary burial cables with thin PVC insulation that crack and degrade within 5–8 years in coastal salt spray, our USE-2 features thicker, UV-stabilized XLPE insulation that forms a protective barrier against corrosion and UV radiation. This design delivers 3x longer service life (up to 30 years) and eliminates the need for frequent replacements, directly reducing the client’s maintenance costs and downtime risks.
XHHW-2 cable for electrical systems
Sizes: 3/0 AWG, 500 kcmil, 600 kcmil (copper conductor, cross-linked XLPE insulation, flame-retardant jacket) Application: Main power distribution loops within the generation facility, high-load equipment connections (such as LNG turbine auxiliary systems), and critical grid interties that require continuous, reliable power transmission Advantage: UL 44 certified with cross-linked insulation, offering superior thermal stability and mechanical toughness compared to standard XHHW cables. Standard XHHW cables often soften or degrade under the high operating temperatures (up to 90°C) and persistent humidity in Puerto Rico’s generation plants, leading to insulation breakdown and short circuits. Our XHHW-2 XLPE electric cable for electrical systems is engineered to maintain structural integrity even in these harsh conditions, with enhanced resistance to oil, chemicals, and moisture—critical for heavy-duty generation systems where downtime can result in significant financial losses.
Medium-Voltage Power Cable
Specifications: 15kV, 25kV, 35kV XLPE insulated copper cables (single-core and three-core options), with aluminum armor for mechanical protection and anti-corrosion shielding; conductor sizes ranging from 185 mm² to 630 mm² to accommodate varying load demands Application: Generator outlet circuits (connecting LNG turbines to main transformers), main transformer high-voltage connections, and high-voltage grid integration links that transmit power from the retrofitted generation facility to the regional power grid Advantage: Full UL compliance (meeting UL 1277 and UL 62 standards), enhanced shielding to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) from nearby power equipment, and a specialized anti-corrosion design tailored for Puerto Rico’s coastal environment. Unlike low-grade medium-voltage cables that suffer from voltage drops and insulation breakdown under heavy load or extreme weather (such as hurricanes or tropical storms), our medium-voltage power cables feature thick XLPE insulation, reinforced shielding, and a corrosion-resistant outer jacket. These features ensure stable power transmission even during peak load periods and severe weather events, eliminating costly outages and ensuring the retrofitted generation units operate at full capacity. Additionally, the cables are designed to be compatible with existing grid infrastructure, reducing installation complexity and ensuring seamless integration with the client’s existing systems.
